WVU Ends Season with Loss at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Despite a pair of players finishing in double-digit kills, the West Virginia University volleyball dropped its season finale, 3-0, to the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday afternoon at University Rec Center in Fort Worth. TCU took the match in set scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-19.
West Virginia will finish the season at 5-24 overall and 0-16 in Big 12 action. TCU moves to 19-9 and 9-7 in league play.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Montgomery and sophomore middle blocker Mia Swanegan led the squad with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. The duo also posted four blocks, with Montgomery notching a block assists and Swanegan going for a block solo and a pair of block assists.
Junior setter Haley Roe had 24 assists to go with a pair of kills, hitting .400 in the match. She also had a block solo, a block assist and five digs.
Junior defensive specialist MaTia Hughes had a team-best 12 digs, with freshman defensive specialist Abby Brown chipping in eight. Sophomore libero Gianna Gotterba and sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Cross each had seven. Gotterba also had WVU’s lone service ace.
Playing in the final match of her career, senior middle blocker Caleah Wells went for five kills and a pair of block assists. West Virginia finished the day with 29 kills and 24 errors with 7.0 team blocks as TCU posted 39 kills with 11.0 team blocks, hitting for a .238 clip.
The Mountaineers battled hard in the first set, as Swanegan and Montgomery each found the court early. Three straight WVU attacking errors gave TCU a 4-3 lead before the Horned Frogs rattled off 10 in a row, undeterred by a pair of WVU timeouts. Swanegan notched a block to end the run, then added a kill as West Virginia trailed 16-8. A kill from Roe, followed by a TCU attacking error, cut WVU’s deficit down to seven at 18-11. However, the Mountaineers recorded attacking errors on three of the last four points as the Horned Frogs won the set, 25-12.
Swanegan and Montgomery again provided the offensive spark in set two, though TCU edged the Mountaineers out for an 8-7 lead. Montgomery put two more through the pins, but the Horned Frogs continued to lead at 15-10. TCU scored five straight to make it a six-point advantage at 22-16. The Mountaineers went on to notch three straight kills with the Horned Frogs at set point, 24-20, before TCU found the court to take the set 25-20 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
West Virginia started the final set on a 4-0 run, capped by a Gotterba ace. The Horned Frogs struck back with four straight of their own to tie the set at 4-4. A pair of Montgomery kills, combined with a block from Wells and Shreve, push the Mountaineers back in front 8-5. Roe put down her second kill of the day as WVU kept an 11-10 lead before TCU tied the set on the following rally. Scoring spurts of 3-0 and 4-0 put the Horned Frogs on top, 23-17, but the Mountaineers scored a pair on a Swanegan kill and a TCU error. However, the Frogs recovered with a block to claim the set, 25-19, as well as the 3-0 sweep.
