FORT WORTH, Texas – Playing its third match in four days, the West Virginia volleyball team will conclude the season on Friday as the Mountaineers take on TCU at the University Rec Center in Fort Worth. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET.
“We may not end the season with the record we want, but I think we’ve made some strides as a team,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara, who will wrap up his first season with the Mountaineers. “I’m proud of the way we battled through adversity and the efforts we’ve made to get better every time we hit the court.”
Friday will mark the second meeting of the season and the ninth in the all-time series between TCU (18-9, 8-7) and WVU (5-23, 0-15). The Mountaineers and the Horned Frogs first met in 2009 when TCU won a 3-0 neutral site match. The series resumed in 2012 when WVU joined the Big 12. The Horned Frogs lead the series 6-2, including a 3-1 win earlier this year, though the Mountaineers won a 3-2 match in Morgantown last season.
After a 3-0 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, TCU enters Friday’s match at 18-9 overall and 8-7 in Big 12 play. Guided by former WVU coach Jill Kramer, the Horned Frogs lead the league in blocking, averaging 2.9 per set. Regan McGuire and Natalie Gower lead the conference at 1.52 and 1.27 blocks per set, respectively. Ashley Smith ranks 10th in the league at 2.97 kills per set while setter Alexia Heist is 10th at 5.32 assists per set.
West Virginia is coming off back-to-back losses at Oklahoma, falling 3-0 to the Sooners and both Tuesday and Wednesday evening. The team were forced to play twice after previously postponing a match that was slated for Oct. 24 in Morgantown. OU is slated to play a pair of matches at the WVU Coliseum in 2016.
The Mountaineers faced the Horned Frogs on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown with TCU winning the match, 3-1. Morgan Montgomery had 14 kills and a pair of blocks in the match, as Mia Swanegan added 13 kills and four block assists. Hannah Shreve had a team-best four block assists as WVU hit .114 with 50 kills and 11.0 team blocks in the match.
Montgomery continues to lead the Mountaineers and rank among the Big 12’s best with 3.74 kills per set, notching a total of 23 in the two matches at OU. Gianna Gotterba continues to be a defensive leader, averaging 3.60 digs per set to rank sixth in the league, while Shreve’s 0.99 blocks per set leads the blocking effort.
WVU capped the 2014 season with a thrilling win, and will hope to repeat that feat in 2015. Last year, the Mountaineers traveled to Manhattan, Kansas, and won a 3-2 match at Kansas State. It marked the first win over a top-20 RPI program in WVU history and helped West Virginia set a new program record with six Big 12 wins.
