MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second time this season, West Virginia University senior swimmer Andrew Marsh was named the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer-of the-Week by CollegeSwimming.com.
Highlighted by a win in the 100 backstroke, Marsh advanced to the A final and placed in the top five in all four individual events he raced in at the Tennessee Invitational, Nov. 20-22. He also placed second in the 100 butterfly, third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle at the four team, three day event.
“Andrew had some solid performances last week at Tennessee,” WVU coach Vic Riggs said. “To be recognized for them is an honor for him. Andrew continues to raise his level of expectation for himself and our team, which is translating to some very strong performances for him.”
Marsh’s honor is the fourth CollegeSwimming.com accolade of the season for the Mountaineers, as he was also recognized on Oct. 28 and senior Jaimee Gillmore and junior Nate Carr were honored on Oct. 21. Marsh was also named the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week by the conference on Nov. 5.
At the Tennessee Invite, Marsh won the 100 backstroke with a 47.01. After a 58.87 long-course time in the prelims, Marsh won the finals by 0.18 seconds and was one of two swimmers to post a time under 48 seconds.
The Bemus Point, New York, native earned the runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly with a 47.33. He beat out Tennessee’s Tyler Mills by 0.40 seconds after the WVU senior recorded a 56.56 long-course time in the prelims.
On the final day of competition, Marsh earned his fourth A final appearance of the weekend in the 100 freestyle. He finished third overall with a time of 44.17, one of six to finish within one second of the bronze medal finish.
Marsh began the weekend with a fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 20.13.
In relay events, Marsh helped WVU place in the top six on all five events he raced in. The Mountaineers placed fourth in the 400 and 800 freestyle relay, fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay and sixth in the 200 medley relay.
The Mountaineers will travel to the USA Swimming Winter Nationals, in Federal Way, Washington, from Dec. 2-5, while the divers compete at the USA Diving Winter Nationals from Dec. 15-20 in Indianapolis in the final competition before the New Year.
