WVU Drops 3-0 Match at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – Outside hitters Morgan Montgomery and Bridgett Talia combined for 25 kills, but it wasn’t enough as the West Virginia volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to the Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday evening at McCasland Field House in Norman. The Sooners took the match in set scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-18.
West Virginia (5-22, 0-14) and Oklahoma (11-15, 5-9) will square off again on Wednesday in an 8 p.m. match at McCasland Field House.
“We got off to a good start, but couldn’t maintain our momentum,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “We have a quick turnaround, so hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and make adjustments. We need more consistency to put ourselves in a better position for tomorrow’s game.”
Montgomery notched a team-best 14 kills, hitting for a .290 clip with a pair of digs. Talia finished with 11 kills, with sophomore middle blocker Mia Swanegan chipping in six and adding a block solo to go along with a pair of block assists. Senior middle blocker Caleah Wells found the court on five occasions, also posting a pair of block assists.
Junior middle blocker Hannah Shreve led the blocking effort four block assists and hit .250 in the match with a pair of kills. Sophomore libero Gianna Gotterba led the floor defense with 10 digs and registered one of WVU’s two service aces, with junior defensive specialist MaTia Hughes accounting for the other.
Junior setter Haley Roe assisted on 34 of West Virginia’s 38 kills as the Mountaineers hit for a .179 clip as a team with 6.0 blocks. OU hit .351 with 38 kills and 11.0 team blocks.
Talia led the Mountaineers in set one, notching five kills. WVU tallied four of the first five points, including an ace by Hughes, to start with a 5-1 lead before OU called a timeout to regroup. Montgomery found the court twice after the stoppage to keep West Virginia ahead, 9-7. Four straight by the Sooners then pushed them ahead 11-9 before the Mountaineers scored on a kill by Wells and a block from Shreve and Swanegan to tie the set, 11-11. The Sooners capitalized on three straight errors by WVU for a 19-15 advantage, though the Mountaineers returned the favor to cut the deficit to one, down 19-18. After trading points, OU scored three of the last four to win the set on a block, 25-21.

Three straight by the Sooners put them ahead 10-7 before they rattled off four in a row for a six-point advantage at 18-12. A Talia kill extended the set, but the Sooners struck back with a kill for the 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
