MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Andrew Marsh and Nate Carr posted top-five finishes as the West Virginia University swimming and diving team opened competition at the three-day Tennessee Invite in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Friday.
The morning prelims were competed in long-course meters, while the evening finals were raced in short-course yards.
Through the first day of competition, the Mountaineer men earned 161 points, while the women have 115 points. Tennessee leads the women with 396.5 points followed by Missouri (306), Virginia Tech (223) and West Virginia. For the men, Missouri leads with 353.5 points, followed by Tennessee (300), Virginia Tech (255) and WVU.
“I thought we came out a little flat this morning and let the competition get into our heads as we were swimming long course,” said WVU coach Vic Riggs. “However, we had a very strong turn-around tonight with Emma Skelley, Nate Carr and Andrew Marsh highlighting our scoring swims, and all with season-best times” said Riggs. “Our relays were okay, but not what we’re capable of.”
Carr advanced to the A final in the 200 individual medley, and Marsh earned a spot in the A final of the 50 freestyle. Additionally, Skelley and Ross Glegg earned spots in the 500 freestyle and 50 freestyle B finals, respectively. Sophomore Alex Obendorf led the WVU divers with an eight-place finish on 3-meter.
Carr posted a season-best 1:47.43 in the A final of the 200-yard individual medley to place fourth overall. The senior was in a tight race at the finish, as six athletes finished within 1.54 seconds for the top six spots.
In the next men’s event, Marsh took fifth overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a 20:13. It was a season-best time for the senior, as he earned a top-five finish by 0.04 seconds.
Along with Marsh in the men’s 50 freestyle, senior Ross Glegg earned a spot in the B final and touched the wall in 20.43 to finish 13th overall with a season-best time.
In the women’s 500-yard freestyle, the first individual event of the finals, Skelley finished 2nd in the B final, 10th overall, with a 4:40.31. It was a season best time for the junior.
The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay squad raced to a fifth-place finish to open the evening’s finals. Marsh, Glegg, Carr and Frank Csonka, touched the wall in 1:21.29.
In the final relay event of the day, the men’s 400 medley relay team also placed fifth overall with a 3:16.28. Marsh led off, followed by Max Spender, Chase Williams and Glegg.
For the WVU divers, Obendorf placed eighth on 3-meter with a 315.75. Fellow sophomore Mike Proietto placed 11th with a 295.20.
