Trio Earns Academic All-Big 12 Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three members of the West Virginia University volleyball team have been named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Team, as announced by the league on Wednesday. Morgan Montgomery, Gianna Gotterba and Hannah Shreve are all first-time honorees.
“Balancing athletics and academics is a challenge, especially at this level with the travel schedule that we have,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “This is a great achievement by Morgan, Gianna and Hannah and is a testament to their work ethic and dedication to this university both on and off the court.”
A sophomore outside hitter, Montgomery is an exercise physiology major from Centennial, Colorado. Fellow sophomore Gianna Gotterba, a libero, is a journalism major who hails from Stockton, California. Junior middle blocker Hannah Shreve is a native of Charleston, West Virginia, who will complete her degree in accounting this year.
All three are team leaders on the court as well as the classroom. Montgomery leads the Mountaineers in kills per set 3.73, ranking third in the Big 12. Gotterba boasts a team-best 3.57 digs per set, good for sixth in the league, and Shreve leads the team’s blocking efforts, ranking seventh in the Big 12 with 1.01 blocks per set.
Fifty-four Big 12 student-athletes in all were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team. The first team is comprised of 39 selections.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
