Mountaineers Open Cary Gym for Fall Classic
November 16, 2015 05:05 PM | Gymnastics
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will hold its annual Fall Classic intrasquad on Tuesday, Nov. 17, Cary Gym, at 4:30 p.m.
Fans are invited to attend the intrasquad inside the team’s practice facility Tuesday evening.
Held each year as one of the team’s final preparations for its regular-season opener, the Fall Classic pits the Mountaineers against each other, as the gymnasts compete their routines in front of judges and fans for the first time.
“This is the first real pressure situation we can present to the team before we compete in a regular-season meet, and it’s important for us to see how these gymnasts react when their routines count,” said coach Jason Butts. “I think the team is ready for tomorrow’s classic – they’ve been working hard all preseason. It’s going to compete these routines in front of judges and fans and to see where this team stands as we head into the final stretch of preseason.
“We encourage all our fans to stop by Cary Gym tomorrow night. The more fans we have here, the more beneficial this meet is for the team.”
Eleven gymnasts return for the Mountaineers this season, including seniors Melissa Idell, Jaida Lawrence and Audrey Tolbert. WVU is joined this season by six freshmen: Carly Galpin, Kirah Koshinski, Sarah Moore, Kelsey Sorrenson, Jaquie Tun and Tiara Wright.
The Mountaineers are coming off a strong 2015 season that saw the team compile a 14-9-1 record en route to a No. 28 national ranking. The squad finished a program-best second at the 2015 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship. The Mountaineers also finished fifth at the NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships with a score of 195.65, the second-best regional mark in team history.
WVU opens its 2016 at Denver, with Southern Utah, on Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. ET.
