Paladino Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore cross country runner Millie Paladino has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
At the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, Nov. 13, West Virginia placed fifth in the region, totaling a team score of 134. Paladino led the way for the Mountaineers, as she crossed the finish line in 11th place overall, with a time of 21:16.2.
In addition to her top-15 finish, she was one of two Mountaineers to earn NCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.
Throughout the race, Paladino remained strong as she led the pack for West Virginia from start to finish. She stayed consistent with her pace, running near the top 33 runners within the first mile. As the second mile approached, Paladino inched up toward the top-23 runners. Near the halfway mark, in the third split, Paladino ran ahead of five runners to pace near the top 18. Just before the home stretch she ran about a 5:30 mile pace to give her the 11th-place finish.
This was the Morgantown, West Virginia, native’s first Mid-Atlantic Regional race, and she was selected to compete at her second consecutive 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship. She was one of four individuals from the Mid-Atlantic region to be selected to compete at the national championship.
In 2014, Paladino appeared in her first NCAA Cross Country Championship as a freshman when WVU qualified as a team and placed eighth. Paladino finished 210th overall, crossing the finish line in 22:01.3.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: No. 4-ranked and No. 2-seeded West Virginia plays host to the NCAA Tournament second and third rounds Nov. 20 and Nov. 22, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers will face Northwestern at 6 p.m. Friday night … Minnesota and Loyola Marymount will kick first that day at 3 p.m. … the winners will meet in the tournament’s third round on Sunday, at 1 p.m. … tickets for Friday’s game are on sale at WVUGAME.com … tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and youth, and $2 for groups of 10 or more … group tickets will only be available in advance and not at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium gate on game day … one ticket provides admission for both games Friday … with the men’s basketball team playing at 7 p.m. Friday night, parking will be extremely limited in the parking lots around the WVU Coliseum Complex … fans who arrive to park in the Natatorium/Band lot before 6 p.m. can park free of charge … fans who arrive after 6 p.m. to park in the Natatorium/Band lot will be charged $10 for parking to attend either the soccer match or the basketball game.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: The Mountaineers (17-2-1, 6-0-1) earned their first tournament victory since 2010 with a 4-0 win against Duquesne in a first-round matchup on Nov. 13, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … sophomore midfielder Carla Portillo netted the game-winner 3:29 into the match … freshman defender Hannah Abraham gave WVU a two-goal edge in the 45th minute … WVU also received second-half goals from sophomore forward Amandine Pierre-Louis and freshman forward Nia Gordon … the Mountaineers finished with a 26-5 edge in shots … Hannah Steadman made one save for WVU, while Vanessa Perdomo stopped 10 for Duquesne … WVU earned a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Notes: WVU’s clean sheet was its 14th of the season, matching the program record set in 2010 … WVU advances to the second round for the first time since 2013 and the 10th time in program history … senior defender Maggie Bedillion tallied two assists, her second two-assist game of the season … the teams battled strong winds throughout the match … the Mountaineers will host second- and third-round games for the first time under the new NCAA Tournament format … Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and the Wildcats … WVU is 3-0 against Big Ten teams this year.
This Week in Men’s Soccer: Last weekend’s Mid-American Conference Tournament marked the end of the season for the WVU men’s soccer team.
Last Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU fell at No. 4 Akron in the Mid-American Conference Semifinals, 3-2 on Friday in Akron, Ohio … senior Jamie Merriam netted WVU’s second goal after the Mountaineers scored their first on an own goal … junior Mike Desiderio earned an assist on Merriam’s goal.

Last Week in Wrestling: No. 19 West Virginia traveled to the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, New York, for a trio of dual matches … the Mountaineers went 1-2 at the event … No. 16/18 Dylan Cottrell (157) had a first-period pin while No. 3/4 Zeke Moisey (125) and Parker VonEgidy (174) also had wins in a 21-12 loss to No. 3-ranked Michigan … Moisey, Cottrell and VonEgidy were joined by Tim Wheeling (165), Bubba Scheffel (184) and Jacob A. Smith (197) in guiding the team to a 19-13 win over Buffalo … Cottrell, Smith and Scheffel were also victorious in a 23-9 loss to No. 20 Oregon State.
Notes: The Mountaineers jumped three spots in last week’s rankings, moving up to No. 19 after opening the season at No. 21 … WVU boasts three grapplers in the top-25, including No. 3/4 Zeke Moisey (125), No. 16/18 Dylan Cottrell (157) and No. 8/NR Jacob A. Smith (197) via Intermat and FloWrestling … Cottrell leads the team with a 6-0 mark and a team-best 23 takedowns … he has yet to give up a takedown and boasts a team-high four bonus-point victories … Parker VonEgidy upset No. 11-ranked Davonte Mahomes of Michigan, winning a 9-7 decision.
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers wrap up their home slate on Saturday when they host No. 10 Kansas at the WVU Coliseum … first serve is slated for 3:30 p.m … WVU will honor seniors Caleah Wells and Brittany Sample as part of its annual Senior Day celebration.
Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia lost a pair of Big 12 matches last week … the Mountaineers dropped a 3-0 match to Iowa State on Wednesday at the WVU Coliseum … despite seven kills from Caleah Wells, the team fell in set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-15 … Hannah Shreve hit a team-best .857 with six kills … on Friday, the Mountaineers fell 3-0 to Texas Tech in Lubbock … sophomore outside hitter Morgan Montgomery had a team-high 15 kills and contributed to the team’s eight total blocks as the Mountaineers fell in set scores of 31-29, 25-14 and 25-21 … in addition to Montgomery, sophomore middle blocker Mia Swanegan and senior middle blocker Caleah Wells each had six kills with junior middle blocker Hannah Shreve adding five … freshman outside hitter Bridgett Talia added four kills and junior right side Dzeni Hadzisehovic went for three … junior setter Haley Roe assisted on 34 of West Virginia’s 40 kills as the Mountaineers hit for a .155 clip as a team.
Coach Reed Sunahara after the Iowa State loss: “Obviously, it’s disappointing to not win. We’ve got to keep grinding and keep getting better. My expectations are always high. I think we need to keep pushing, to keep grinding and to keep getting better every day. That’s what we need to play for. Eventually, a win will come in the conference. Right now, we’re just working getting better, individually and collectively, and making sure that we’re trying to do the right things to build momentum into the next day.”

Last Week in Cross Country: The West Virginia University cross country team placed fifth overall at the 2015 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in Princeton, New Jersey, on the West Windsor Fields (6k) … in the 30-team Mid-Atlantic Regional field, No. 10 Penn State won the region title with a team score of 60 … Georgetown took second (75), followed by Princeton in third (80), Villanova in fourth (125) and West Virginia in fifth (134) … WVU sophomore Millie Paladino and senior Savanna Plombon earned NCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors for finishing in the top 25 … Paladino led the Mountaineers, while crossing the finish line in 11th place with a time of 21:16.2 … Plombon came in second for WVU, placing 23rd overall with time of 21:25.2, followed by sophomores Amy Cashin in 27th (21:45.7), Brynn Harshbarger in 36th (21:59.2) and Maggie Drazba in 37th (22:00.4) … other Mountaineer finishers were freshman Anna French in 47th with a time of 22:09.3, and senior Kelly Williams in 58th (22:22).

This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia hosts Coppin State on Monday in a 7 p.m. contest … the Mountaineers open the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge at Gonzaga on Sunday, Nov. 22, in a 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT tipoff at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Washington … the Mountaineers will then play USC on Monday, Nov. 23, and Grand Canyon on Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Spokane, Washington … both contests are slated for 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT tipoffs.

Notes: The 43-point win against Delaware State was the largest margin of victory in a season-opening game for the Mountaineers … West Virginia is now 12-3 in season openers and 14-1 in home openers under Mike Carey … Bria Holmes has accumulated 1,421 points, which is 16th all-time at WVU … Holmes is six points away from reaching No. 15 and nine points away from reaching No. 14 … Lanay Montgomery’s four blocks on Saturday moved her to No. 4 on the WVU career chart with 138 career blocks … Montgomery is 35 blocks from reaching No. 3 Olivia Bradley (172) … West Virginia is 91-7 (.929) at home against non-conference opponents since 2002 … West Virginia has won 19 consecutive games against non-conference competition inside the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers are 170-44 (.784) under Carey at home.
Coach Mike Carey after Saturday’s win: “We don’t teach them to beat Delaware State. We teach them how to beat the top teams in the country, and we’re nowhere near that right now. We have to continue to work hard, continue to get better and continue to get smarter.”
This Week in Swimming and Diving: After a month off from competition, the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will travel to compete at the Tennessee Invite, in Knoxville, Tennessee, for the three-day event, on Nov. 20-22 … the meet will begin at 8 a.m. each day.

Last Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers tallied their sixth straight victory of the season on Nov. 14, defeating No. 9 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foe Army, 4709-4653, at the WVU Rifle Range … West Virginia (6-0, 4-0 GARC) outshot Army in both disciplines, besting the Black Knights in air rifle, 2363-2336, and smallbore, 2346-2317.

This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia resumes play in January for the dual meet portion of the season … the Mountaineers will kick off the spring season when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m.

Notes: This fall, the Mountaineers competed in five tournaments … sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team with 10 singles wins, followed by senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo with eight victories this season … the doubles tandems of Barrett and Martinez, and Lewis and Choo are also tied for a team-best 4-3 doubles record this fall.
Coach Miha Lisac on the conclusion of the fall season: “We are working on the right things going into the spring season. Each and every player has improved, and we also improved as a team. We are not far off, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, there is more work to be done, but we can see that we are capable of playing well and can capitalize on points when given the opportunity.”

Notes: The rowing novice team swept Duquesne, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon to conclude the fall season on Saturday, Nov. 7, on the Allegheny River … the novice 8 ‘A’ boat raced to a first-place finish with a time of 11:11.86, five seconds ahead of Pitt … the Novice 8 ‘B’ boat also won, finishing in front of Pitt with a time of 10:37.8 on a course approximately 200 meters shorter than the first novice 8 competition … in the last two races of the day, West Virginia finished first with a time of 11:40.8 in the Novice 4 ‘A’ race, followed by another first-place finish in the Novice 4 ‘B’ race … the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Oct. 31, was the first regatta of the season for the novice team … eight of the Mountaineers’ 10 boats posted top-10 finishes on the Occoquan Reservoir … WVU’s four medals came with first-and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+, a bronze-medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 and a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Championship 4+ … the WVU rowing team also had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 3 … the Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8 … to open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8, as it faced 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers will take a winter hiatus and return to the course on Feb. 15, when they travel to Houston, Texas, for the President’s Day Challenge … the event will be hosted by Rice.
