The West Virginia University women’s basketball team closes out its two-game homestand in a 7 p.m. tipoff with Coppin State, on Monday, Nov. 16, at the WVU Coliseum.
Tickets can be purchased online at WVUGAME.com by selecting the print-at-home option and by calling 1-800-WVU GAME.
A free video stream will be provided at WVUsports.com. Jeff Culhane and Liz Repella will call the action on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans locally can listen to the contest on 94.3 FM in Morgantown or online at WVUsports.com.
West Virginia and Coppin State (0-1) meet for the eighth time on Monday with the Mountaineers winning all seven of the previous meetings. Last season, WVU collected an 83-43 victory in Morgantown. The Eagles, who return four starters from last year’s team, fell 73-42, to VCU on Friday. Keena Samuels led CSU with 12 points, while Jordan Swails followed with nine in the loss.
WVU (1-0) is coming off a 77-34 win over Delaware State to open the season on Saturday. It was the largest margin of victory for the Mountaineers in a season-opening game. Freshman Alexis Brewer registered a game-high 14 points in the victory. Teana Muldrow added 13 points and set new career marks with four steals and three assists.
“We don’t teach them to beat Delaware State,” noted coach Mike Carey after the team’s win on Saturday. “We teach them how to beat the top teams in the country, and we’re nowhere near that right now. We have to continue to work hard, continue to get better and continue to get smarter.”
Preseason All-Big 12 selection Bria Holmes is just six points from reaching No. 15 on WVU’s all-time scoring chart and nine points from climbing to No. 14. Additionally, coach Carey is two wins away from reaching his 300th career victory and is four victories shy of breaking the program’s all-time wins mark of 301 victories set by Kittie Blakemore (19 seasons).
With her four blocks on Saturday, Lanay Montgomery has recorded 138 career deflections to surpass Lori Wilson (137) for No. 4 all-time. Montgomery is 35 away from reaching Olivia Bradley, who currently sits third.
West Virginia hits the road for four games beginning Sunday, Nov. 22, at Gonzaga, in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge. The Mountaineers will face Gonzaga (Nov. 22), USC (Nov. 23) and Grand Canyon (Nov. 24) in Spokane, Washington, before playing Yale on Nov. 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
