MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team opens its 2015-16 home season at the WVU Rifle Range against Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foe No. 9 Army on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 8 a.m.
“It is our first home match of the season,” said coach Jon Hammond. “We had quite a few matches on the road already, and we are looking forward to shooting at our first home match of the year.
“With this match being at home, it’s almost like the start of the season all over again, and we want to use this match as an opportunity to improve.”
WVU (5-0, 3-0 GARC) looks to capture its fourth GARC victory of the season while at home. Fans are encouraged to sit inside the range to watch the competition. The WVU Rifle Range is located directly behind the WVU Coliseum near the WVU Natatorium.
“It will be great to have some spectators come out and support us, and I’m sure there will be plenty of family and friends that are going to come out and watch as well,” Hammond noted.
Last season, the Mountaineers outshot the Black Knights (1-3, 1-2 GARC) 4717-4644, on Nov. 16, at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center. They earned victories in both guns, defeating then-ranked No. 12 Army 2335-2311 in smallbore, and 2382-2333 in air rifle.
In its last weekend of competition, WVU tallied its fifth victory of the season with a 4697-4692 win over No. 4 Murray State at the University of Akron’s Championship Rehearsal Rifle Match, on Nov. 7. The Mountaineers defeated the Racers in both guns, narrowly winning smallbore, 2330-2328, and air rifle, 2367-2364.
Senior Michael Bamsey continues to be the most consistent smallbore shooter for the team, averaging 585.2 this season, while senior Garrett Spurgeon leads the team in air rifle with a 593.6 average. Spurgeon shot a season-high 596 score against GARC foe Mississippi on Nov. 1.
Most recently, the Black Knights hosted the all service academy President Trophy’s Match, on Nov. 7. Army placed second among the four service academies, finishing behind No. 6 Air Force. Army posted season highs in aggregate (4655) and smallbore (2313), while tying their best result in air rifle (2342). Air Force recorded a 4679, Navy placed third with an aggregate score of 4642, and Coast Guard rounded out the group with a 4495.
WVU owns a 34-10 all-time series record over Army.
