MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a month off from competition, the West Virginia University rowing team travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, for the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Sandy Run Regional Park.
The Head of the Occoquan is hosted by the Occoquan Boat Club, on the Occoquan Reservoir. It will be the first regatta of the season for the novice team.
“This is always an exciting racing weekend for us, because it’s the first race for the novice squad, and it is the only race in the fall when the varsity and novice squads travel together,” said WVU rowing coach Jimmy King. “I’m eager to see how much progress the novices have made, as well as how they compete this weekend in their first exposure to outside competition.”
The Mountaineers begin action at 11:40 a.m., with one of 26 entries in the Women’s Championship 8 event. WVU will also have three entries in the 31-boat Women’s Championship 4+ race at 2:30 p.m.
The novice squad is set to race at 11:50 a.m., with three of 21 entries in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ event. The novices race again with three of 17 entries in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 race at 2 p.m.
Last season, the Mountaineers posted two top-five finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ event, earning a silver and a bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan.
The varsity squad has been idle from competition since its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Oct. 3.
“On Saturday, we’re looking to see how well the varsity crews maintain the technical aspects that we have been working on over the past few weeks,” King noted. “Can they collectively transfer those skills into racing?”
The WVU rowing team had a strong showing in its fall season opener. The Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8.
