Marsh Named Swimmer-of-the-Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior swimmer Andrew Marsh was named the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer-of the-Week by CollegeSwimming.com after winning seven races last weekend.
Marsh won every race he competed in as the WVU men swept Seton Hall and Xavier at the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Oct. 23-24 at the WVU Natatorium. Marsh is the third WVU swimmer to earn CollegeSwimming.com Swimmer-of-the-Week accolades in the past week after senior Jaimee Gillmore and junior Nate Carr were recognized last week.
“Andrew is competing and training at a very high level right now,” WVU coach Vic Riggs said. “It’s good to see it being recognized, but I know he’s focused on more fast swimming in his future, and that’s what’s driving him now.”
Marsh, a Bemus Point, New York, native, won all seven races he was entered in at the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend by a margin of 1.4 seconds or more. He notched four wins in individual events and three as part of relay teams.
The first victory came in the men’s 200-yard medley relay, were Marsh opened the relay with a time of 22.51 in the 50 backstroke, the fastest individual backstroke time out of the six teams by more than two seconds. In the 200 freestyle, a 1:39.28 gave Marsh the win by nearly four seconds. A 1:23.73 in the 200 freestyle relay saw another WVU victory, as Marsh posted a time of 20.91, the fastest time by 0.58 seconds.
Marsh won his fourth race of the day with a 49.39 in the 100 butterfly, a victory by 1.72 seconds. His fifth win came in the 100 backstroke, where he raced to a 48.45 to capture 1.67-second win.
His final individual victory came in the 100 freestyle thanks to a 45.58. Marsh stayed a perfect seven-for-seven in the 400-yard medley relay, when WVU finished with a time of 3:24.
On Monday, Marsh was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
In the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend competition on Oct. 23-24, the WVU men and women combined for wins in 38 of the 40 events. Marsh headlined the men’s squad, while senior Jaimee Gillmore led the women with victories in all six races she competed in The WVU men went 2-0, with wins over Xavier (251-108) and Seton Hall (266-93), while the women went 3-0 with wins over Xavier (266-93), Seton Hall (275-88) and Butler (284-75).
The Mountaineers have four weeks off from competition to prepare for the three-day Tennessee Invite, in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Nov. 20-22 … the meet will begin at 8 a.m. each day.
