Mountaineers Finish Day One at Akron Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team finished day one at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, with two doubles and one singles victories, on Friday.
“I thought we had a slow start in singles earlier today,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We have to continue to be consistent in both our singles and doubles approach, and that is what we are going to focus on going into tomorrow’s match.”
In the morning session, West Virginia battled against Cornell. Sophomore Habiba Shaker tallied the Mountaineers’ only victory of the day in singles play. Shaker cruised past Cornell’s Alexandra D’Ascenzo in straight sets, only giving up three games in the second set, to win by a score of 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles action, West Virginia claimed two out of three matches against host Akron. Senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Yvon Martinez defeated Akron’s Shannon Newnes and Carli Knezevich by a score of 6-2.
Junior Kaja Mrgole and Shaker also teamed up to tally the Mountaineers second doubles victory of the day, besting Akron’s Ariadna Blinova and Karolina Maksimova (6-4).
The Akron Invitational resumes on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Mountaineers face UMKC in singles action, at 9 a.m., followed by doubles play against Cornell at noon.
