MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams host the first Big 12 vs ACC Weekend, competing against Georgia Tech on Friday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at the WVU Natatorium.
“We are very excited to host Georgia Tech this Friday,” said coach Vic Riggs. “They are new to our schedule and are a very talented and well coached team.”
On Friday, WVU faces Georgia Tech for its first time. The Yellow Jackets opened the season hosting Penn State and Liberty at the GT Aquatic Center. GT’s men’s team defeated both, while the women’s team beat Liberty but fell to Penn State.
“Georgia Tech swam very well two weeks ago. We will have to be at our best to get the win, said Riggs. “I think this comes at the perfect time for our teams to see how we respond to great competition.”
West Virginia faces Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Hokies opened the season with their Intra-Quad meet on Oct. 10 and competes at Penn State on Oct. 16, the day before racing WVU.
“Virginia Tech will present a great opportunity for us to compete,” said Riggs, “We will have a good indication of how we’re swimming and diving after GT and can make adjustments if needed. We will be Virginia Tech’s second meet, so we know they will be ready to race.”
Last weekend, the Mountaineers hosted the annual West Virginia State Games at the WVU Natatorium, winning its fifth State Game title. The WVU men and women dominated all 39 events, which they had never done before.
Senior Andrew Marsh led the men’s squad with 10 wins, while senior Jaimee Gillmore led the women’s squad with six victories.
Senior diver Linsday Schmidt and freshman Averly Hobbs qualified for zones on the 1-meter board, along with freshman Julia Calcut and sophomore Alex Obendorf qualifying on the 3-meter board.
“Both meets should be very exciting,” said Riggs. “We will need to stay focused and compete down to the last event. We are home and in our pool and aren’t traveling, so I believe that gives us a distinct advantage. It’s up to us to use that energy and excitement to compete well.”
Following this weekend, the Mountaineers will host their fourth home meet of the season, with the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. Butler, Seton Hall and Xavier will be the Mountaineers’ competition.
