Sear Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Posting WVU’s best finish of the season, freshman Max Sear of the West Virginia golf team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, present by University Apartments.
Sear took second place at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate to help led WVU to a sixth-place finish at the two-day event in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Sear finished the first round tied for first place at three under par with a 68, then shot a 71 to finish even par in the second round.
He carded a two-round score of 68-71=139 for three under par, which was three strokes off the lead. His first-round score of 68 is the second lowest score posted by a Mountaineer this season.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 2/4 Mountaineers close out their home regular-season slate this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU plays host to Kansas on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., before welcoming Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. … Sunday’s match will be televised on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh … Sunday also is “Senior Day,” and WVU’s six seniors will be honored prior to first kick.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (12-1-1, 3-0-1) went 1-0-1 in a two-match Big 12 Conference road swing, playing to a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Oklahoma on Oct. 9, and defeating No. 16/13 Texas Tech, 4-1, in Lubbock on Oct. 11 … senior Hannah Steadman matched her season high with three saves in both matches … freshman forward Nia Gordon scored the game-winner at TTU in the 49th minute … senior midfielder Leah Emaus broke open the scoreless game in the 29th minute with her first goal of the season … sophomore forward Amandine Pierre-Louis added a goal in the 77th minute, and Michaela Abam tallied her team-best ninth goal of the season in the 84th minute.
Notes: WVU outshout OU, 33-7, Friday night, and Sooner Kassidie Stade made 16 saves in the draw … the Mountaineers denied OU a corner kick, the fifth opponent to fail to earn a corner-kick chance this season … as of Oct. 9, WVU’s 11 shutouts rank No. 1 nationally … the Mountaineers need three more clean sheets to match the program record … WVU is the only team to score more than two goals against the Red Raiders this season.
This Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU’s homestand concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 13 when the Mountaineers welcome Penn State to Morgantown ... the non-conference matchup will begin at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium ... West Virginia then continues Mid-American Conference play on Friday, Oct. 16 at Buffalo at 7 p.m.
Last Week in Men’s Soccer: A goal by senior Jamie Merriam in the 84th minute gave the WVU men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Western Michigan in its MAC opener on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium ... the Mountaineers (5-6, 1-0 MAC) won a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams record 13 shots ... WVU had seven shots on goal, while the Broncos had four ... Merriam’s goal, his fourth of the season, came at 83:24, the game winner ... sophomore Joey Piatczyc and freshman Tucker Stephenson earned assists, and it was Piatczyc’s nation-leading 11th of the season ... the week began with a 2-0 loss at Virginia Tech on Tuesday.
Coach Marlon LeBlanc on the team’s win vs. Western Michigan on Friday: “The boys finally got a result that we deserve and we had to grind, but we were pretty good grinding, too. They cleared one off the line somehow, hit the crossbar on another, their keeper makes an unbelievable save in the first half, tipped one over the crossbar. We grinded but we had quality on our attacks and really put them under pressure. The guys played well. A well-deserved result against a very good Western Michigan team.”
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia returns to Morgantown for a pair of home matches at the WVU Coliseum ... the Mountaineers will host Texas Tech on Wednesday evening in a 6 p.m. match ... the team will then welcome Baylor to town on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m., in Big 12 play.
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers wrapped up their nonconference slate last week, dropping a 3-1 loss to Robert Morris, on Wednesday, at the WVU Coliseum ... WVU hit for a .128 clip with 51 kills, but committed 32 errors in falling to RMU and were led by a 22-kill effort from Morgan Montgomery ... West Virginia resumed conference play on Saturday, suffering a 3-0 setback to Kansas State, in Manhattan ... Caleah Wells had 11 kills and hit .440 in the loss as the Mountaineers hit .194 as a team.
Coach Reed Sunahara after the loss at Kansas State: “I thought we did some nice things. We were a lot more competitive today. We need to work on finishing these sets.”
This Week in Golf: West Virginia is off this week ... the Mountaineers will remain in the state to host the first annual Mountaineer Intercollegiate at Pete Dye Golf Club on Oct. 19 and 20 ... the team will host 13 programs, including Akron, Toledo, Mississippi State, St. John’s and Missouri for a 54-hole tournament ... golfers will play 36 holes of continuous play on Monday before returning to the course for the third and final round.
Last Week in Golf: West Virginia finished in sixth place at the rain-shortened Wolfpack Intercollegiate at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina, last week ... the Mountaineers entered the second and final day of the event in first place, but finished nine over on the day to take sixth ... they finished with a team score of 289-293=582 for 14 over par ... freshman Max Sear tied for the lead after the first round and finished in second place with a two-round score of 68-71=139 for three under par ... teammate Avery Schneider also recorded a top-20 finish, tying for 13th place with a score of 70-74=144 for two over while Easton Renwick posted his second top-20 finish of the season, finishing tied for 18th overall.
Coach Sean Covich after the Wolfpack Intercollegiate: “We put ourselves in position to win with about nine holes to play, but just couldn’t execute the shots down the stretch. Once again, Max Sear came up big for us. To have a true freshman nearly win the individual title speaks volumes of his game. We get about a week and a half off to prepare for our home event. We hope to see a lot of support from Mountaineer fans Oct. 19-20 at Pete Dye.”
This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers set out to compete at two separate meets this weekend … on Friday, Oct. 16, the team travels to Madison, Wisconsin, to compete at the Wisconsin Invitational 6k course at 11 a.m., and on Saturday, Oct. 17, it travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete at the Penn State Open at 10 a.m.
Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers were idle last week ... WVU last competed at the Greater Louisville Classic, winning the women’s blue 5k division … the team had two weeks off from competition.
Notes: The team will split its runners for the meets this week … in 2014, WVU placed fifth overall at the Wisconsin Invitational, finishing ahead of 17 nationally ranked teams by USTFCCCA, which included six of the top-10 teams … junior Jillian Forsey was the first Mountaineer to cross the finish line and 11th overall.
This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia returns to action this week as it travels to Lynchburg, Virginia, from Oct. 15-19, to compete in the ITA Atlantic Regional ... 34 teams will participate in the five-day event.
Last Week in Women’s Tennis: The Mountaineers were idle last week.
Notes: Sophomore Habiba Shaker has a team-best 8-0 singles record this fall season … sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo follows Shaker with a 7-2 singles record … senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Yvon Martinez holds a team-best 4-2 doubles record this fall season.
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are idle until Saturday, Oct. 31, as the team travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, for the Head of the Occoquan … the Head of the Occoquan is the first regatta of the season for the novice team.
Last Season in Rowing: The WVU rowing squad was idle last week.
Notes: The WVU rowing team had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 3 … the Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8+ … to open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8+, as it faced 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers host the Big 12 vs. ACC Weekend, featuring Georgia Tech on Friday, Oct. 16, at 5:00 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2:00 p.m., at the WVU Natatorium.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia University swimming and diving team hosted the annual West Virginia State Games on Thursday, Oct. 8, and Friday, Oct. 9, at the WVU Natatorium … the Mountaineers won their fifth consecutive West Virginia State Games title, winning all 39 events … the WVU men’s diving team recorded each of the top five scores and the women placed 1-2-3 on both diving events.
Notes: The men’s and women’s teams won every event each day ... senior diver Linsday Schmidt and freshman Averly Hobbs qualified for zones on the 1-meter board, along with freshman Julia Calcut and sophomore Alex Oberndorf qualifying on the 3-meter board.
Coach Vic Riggs after the West Virginia State Games: “Both teams won every event this year, which is something we haven’t done in a few years.”
This Week in Rifle: WVU breaks from action for two weeks before another two-match road trip ... the Mountaineers will shoot at No. 8 Memphis on Saturday, Oct. 31, before traveling to Oxford, Mississippi, for a match at Mississippi ... both matches are slated to begin at 8 a.m. ET.
Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia opened its 2015-16 season with two matches on the road at Air Force’s Falcon Rifle Range in Colorado Springs, Colorado ... the Mountaineers defeated No. 9 Air Force (4714-4654), on Oct. 10, in both disciplines, outshooting the Falcons in smallbore, 2335-2322, and air rifle, 2370-2358 ... with the win, WVU improved to 18-0 against Air Force .... West Virginia then faced No. 6 Nebraska, on Oct. 11, earning its first Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) victory of the season by a score of 4714-4654 ... the Mountaineers defeated the Huskers in both guns, winning smallbore, 2338-2290, and air rifle, 2376-2364.
Notes: Two Mountaineers tied for the win in air rifle against the Falcons, as seniors Meelis Kiisk (100-100-100-98-98-98) and Garrett Spurgeon (98-99-100-99-99-99) each shot 594 ... junior Jean-Pierre Lucas shot a career-high 592 air rifle score and tied Falcons Ryan Jacobs and Tyler Rico for fourth place ... a trio of Mountaineers tied for first in air rifle against the Huskers, with Spurgeon (100-97-99-99-100-100) and senior Patrick Sunderman (100-100-97-100-100-98), as well as freshman Ginny Thrasher (100-100-98-100-99-98), each shooting 595 ... senior Michael Bamsey matched his career-high smallbore score of 587 (198 kneeling, 199 prone, 192 standing) for the discipline win.
