WVU (12-8, 2-6 Big 12) has lost two consecutive games, including a 73-57 defeat at Texas Tech on Wednesday. Bria Holmes paced the Mountaineers with a team-high 17 points. Senior guard Linda Stepney reached a season-high 16 points in the loss.
“I haven’t seen a team this year we can’t play with,” said coach Mike Carey. “For some reason, in certain parts of the game, we lose concentration. When you bring people off the bench to try to correct it, they’re not correcting it. All of a sudden, a close game becomes a 10 or 12 point game because you’re not getting the correction off the bench.”
Holmes is boasting 20.0 points per game, which is second in the Big 12. Lanay Montgomery’s 3.8 blocks continues to lead the league and is eighth in the NCAA.
The Mountaineers look to avenge a league-opening 71-60 loss at Oklahoma on January 4. OU’s Giyoa Carter scored a career-high 24 points in the win over West Virginia. In the previous meeting, Holmes led WVU with 21 points. WVU maintains a 4-3 edge in the all-time series and has never lost to the Sooners in Morgantown.
Oklahoma’s (13-6, 7-1) eight-game win streak was snapped with an 84-81 double-overtime loss at No. 14 Texas on Thursday. The Sooners’ 45.7 field goal percentage and 77.4 points per game are both second in the Big 12.
Four OU players are tallying double figures as Kaylon Williams leads the way with 11.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Carter (11.1), Peyton Little (10.6) and Sharane Campbell-Olds (10.5) round out double-digit scoring for the Sooners.
A WVU win on Sunday would be mark the 11th time in 14 seasons under Carey that the Mountaineers have won double-figure games inside the WVU Coliseum. This season, the Mountaineers are 9-2 at home with losses to Baylor and Texas Tech.
