Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team struggled against one of the nation’s top teams, as the Mountaineers were swept by No. 31 Ohio State, 7-0, at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center, in Columbus, Thursday afternoon.
“I thought Ohio State played very well and aggressively today,” said coach Miha Lisac. “They played solid in doubles, and then carried that momentum into singles play.”
The Mountaineers (0-1) found themselves in a hole early after surrendering the doubles point, as OSU’s Olivia Sneed and Miho Kowase bested the freshmen duo of Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez with a score of 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Kaja Mrgole and senior Ikttesh Chahal fell to OSU’s Anna Sanford and Grainne O’Neill, 6-3. Sophomore Hailey Barrett and freshman Habiba Shaker closed out the doubles session at No. 2 doubles, with a 5-4 loss against OSU’s No. 26 Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus.
The Buckeyes swept the Mountaineers in two straight sets on all courts. At the No. 4 spot, Chahal forced the second set into a tiebreaker, but fell to Kowase with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (5). At the No. 1 spot, Mrgole stumbled against the 86th-ranked player in the country, Anna Sanford, with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
