MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia University wrestling assistant coach Nick Marable was ranked 10th in the world at 70 kilograms (154 pounds) in the United World Wrestling men’s freestyle rankings announced earlier this month.
Marable was a member of the 2014 U.S. World Team and competed at the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in September. He posted a 2-1 mark, defeating Grigor Grigoryan of Armenia, 4-2, and Akzhurek Tanatarov of Kazakhstan, 2-1, before dropping a 5-2 bout to Ali Shabanau of Belarus in the quarterfinals.
“To me, it doesn’t hold any real significance in where I believe I really am in my training process,” said Marable, who is in his first season with the Mountaineers. “Being the best in the world is a process and something that has been a life-long goal of mine, but I know it will not happen overnight. Working with Coach Henson these past two years, I’ve made huge strides in my performance on the mat and have gained a great deal of confidence with him in my corner. I know that if I keep believing in the system he instills in me, I can be the best in the world this year.”
In 2015, the Memphis native will compete at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament in Colorado Springs later this month and is also slated to compete at the World Cup and World Team Trials. He will defend his national title in May at the 2015 Open Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas.
Marable, along with volunteer assistant Dom Bradley and operations assistant Clarissa Chun, trains under WVU head coach Sammie Henson for Sunkist Kids at the Mountaineer Regional Training Center in Morgantown.
