Tennis Tallies Three Wins on Day Three

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened the 2015 spring season with a 13-5 combined overall record at the Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational. The three-day event took place at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center, in Pittsburgh, from Jan. 16-18.
“It was a solid weekend of competition, and we are continuing to get better,” said coach Miha Lisac. “There were positive things we saw this weekend. We will continue to get better and learn throughout competition.”
Carolina Lewis, Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez swept the Panthers in straight sets. Choo collected her first singles victory of the spring season, as she defeated Pitt’s Amanda Wickman with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Lewis went two-for-two on the weekend, as she bested Pitt’s Amber Washington (7-5, 6-1). Martinez went two-for-two in singles action, as she defeated Pitt’s Molly Wickman in two straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
Junior Hailey Barrett made her debut in singles play, but fell to Pitt’s Lolade Ogungbesan in three sets (7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-1).
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 9 a.m. ET for its first dual match of the season at Ohio State, in Columbus.
