The Mountaineers (10-5, 0-3 Big 12) are in the midst of a three-game losing skid after suffering a 66-62 loss to No. 5 Baylor on Saturday. West Virginia led for nearly eight minutes in the second half before the Lady Bears retook the lead and claimed the victory.
Bria Holmes paced WVU with a game-high 17 points. Sophomore center Lanay Montgomery earned her third double-double with 12 points and a career-best 17 rebounds. Montgomery’s nine offensive boards were the most for a Mountaineer since 2010.
“We’ve got to become consistent,” said coach Mike Carey. “We need Bria Holmes to be consistent, Averee (Fields) be consistent, Linda (Stepney) be consistent, Lanay (Montgomery) be consistent and one or two others to come in and give us some points. No matter who that is. We’ve got to get some points from other areas because they can just load down their defense toward our scorers. Other people have got to be able to step up and hit some shots.”
Holmes leads the Big 12 and sits 12th nationally with 22.1 points per game. Montgomery’s 3.5 blocks is ninth in the NCAA statistical rankings, while Linda Stepney’s assist/turnover ratio of 3.3 is fourth.
Texas Tech and West Virginia meet for the fifth time on Wednesday. The series is even at 2-2 with both teams sweeping the regular-season series in the previous two years. Last year, WVU won both games handily (69-37 in Morgantown and 70-51 in Lubbock).
The Lady Raiders (11-4, 1-2 Big 12) started out the season with an 11-2 mark – their best since the 2009-10 campaign. However, after opening Big 12 play with a win over TCU, Texas Tech has since dropped games at Oklahoma State (66-35) and to Oklahoma (75-58).
Offensively, coach Candi Whitaker’s squad boasts 58.7 points per game and is giving up just 57.7 points to opponents. Senior guard Amber Battle leads the Lady Raider offense with an average 15.6 points and 7.7 rebounds. Kelsi Baker is TTU’s other double-figure scorer, tallying 10.4 points per contest.
