MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team returned to action today at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts for day two in the Pink Invitational.
The Mountaineers opened the day with two rounds of doubles action against Indiana University of Pennsylvania followed by Cleveland State.
Senior Ikttesh Chahal and junior Hailey Barrett earned their third victory as a pair on the weekend against IUP’s Rachel Wood and Katrine Gransoe, 6-0, and CSU’s Mathlide Orange and Aleksandra Golawska, 6-2.
“In doubles Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal continued to do good things on the court,” coach Lisac said. “They played aggressively throughout the last two days, and looked like they were picking up from where they left of last year.”
Sophomore Kaja Mrgole and freshman Carolina Lewis went one for two on the day defeating IUP’s Sophie Butland and Racquel Gonzalez, 6-3, but later fell to CSU’s Ellen Folkers and Victoria Bensimon in the second match, 6-4.
Freshmen tandem Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez earned their second victory as a pair, defeating IUP’s Luise Von Agris and Alanna McFail in a tie break, 6-7 (4-0). In the second match, Choo and Martinez fell to CSU’s Lauren Golick and Princess Gbadamosi, 6-3.
“We have a lot of work to do in doubles play, but there were some positive signs on the day,” Lisac said
WVU faced off against University of Buffalo in the afternoon singles session.
Lewis bested Buffalo’s Laura Holterbosch in two straight sets. Lewis captured the first set, 6-2, and then dominated the second set, 6-0. Mrgole defeated Buffalo’s Tanja Stojanovska in two sets, with a 6-1 victory, followed by a 7-6 victory in the second.
Chahal and Martinez forced three set on the day. Martinez picked up a win defeating Buffalo’s Christine Haraldson, but fell 4-6 in the second. Martinez rallied, and secured a 6-1 third-set victory. Chahal dropped the first set against Buffalo’s Dayana Agasieva, but was able to rally in the final two sets to claim the win.
Choo closed out the day for WVU against Buffalo’s Margarita Kotok. Choo forced three sets, but was unable to pull out a victory. Kotok claimed the first on a tie break, but Choo rallied to take the second. Kotok secured a 6-3 third-set victory.
“Overall we didn’t play our best tennis in singles action. For the most part, I am glad that we pulled through in the third sets,” Lisac said. “We have another round of singles play tomorrow, and we will continue for the players to get better.”
The Pink Invitational will resume again on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. WVU singles action will begin at noon against CSU.
