MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened its fall season at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts today in the Pink Invitational. The Mountaineers sported pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness.
Six Mountaineer players saw doubles action during the course of the day, while five members of the team participated in singles competition.
“We had a good start to the tournament today. We came out aggressive in doubles and had a good day of competition in singles as well,” coach Lisac said. “It is good for the whole team, but especially for freshmen to get over the hump and get the first match under their belt.”
The Mountaineers were dominant in doubles action today, coming out on top of all three matches. In the doubles tournament sophomore Kaja Mrgole teamed up with freshman Carolina Lewis. In addition, freshman Yvon Martinez paired up with redshirt freshman Lyn Yuen Choo, and lone senior Ikttesh Chahal teamed up with junior Hailey Barrett.
In singles action, Choo, Lewis and Martinez made their debut in the Old Gold and Blue, and tallied the first wins of their career.
Mrgole tallied a team-high 14th singles match win of her career, defeating Sophie Butland of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 6-0, 6-4.
“We will be looking to continue with solid play, and be more consistent during the second and third day of matches,” Lisac said.
The Pink Invitational will resume again on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. WVU doubles action will begin at noon against IUP followed by singles play at 1 p.m.
A full recap of the day’s play will be available on WVUSports.com after the completion of competition.
