MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team made it eight in a row as they swept Seton Hall 3-0 in set scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-16 in their second match at the Mountaineer Invitational at the WVU Coliseum on Friday evening.
The win moved the Mountaineers to 8-1 on the season. They will face Saint Francis at noon on Saturday before wrapping up the tournament at 7 p.m. when they host Montana.
Jordan Anderson was once again the story of the match, collecting her third double-double of the season with a team-best 19 kills and 13 digs. She also hit .436, marking the fourth time this season she has hit .300 or better. Anderson has finished in double figures in kills every match this season and has led the Big 12 in kills per set.
“It feels great to win eight straight,” said Anderson. “I’m really excited that this team has taken the challenge of a tougher preseason and has been able to perform. Winning all these games in a row shows how committed everyone is and what an amazing job Coach Kramer has done with this team. I’m confident that we can carry this over into the rest of the schedule.”
Hannah Sackett also finished in double figures for the Mountaineers, recording 10 kills and a pair of block assists. Caleah Wells had five kills and led the squad with five block assists as WVU posted 9.0 team blocks on the evening. Evyn McCoy (six kills), Lamprini Konstantinidou and Nikki Attea (six kills) each had a trio of block assists as well, with Anderson come up with the lone block solo of the night.
Konstantinidou had 40 assists and recorded one of WVU’s two services aces, with Attea claiming the other. Anna Panagiotakopoulos had 13 digs, followed by Gianna Gotterba with eight and Brittany Sample with seven. The Mountaineers hit under .300 for the first time since August 30, hitting for a .208 clip on 119 total attacks.
Stacey Manthorpe was the lone Pirate in double figure kills with 10, while Ashani Rubin hit .364 to lead the squad. Seton Hall (6-3) hit .124 as a team with Manthorpe collecting a double double with 11 digs. The Pirates also had 10.0 team blocks.
The Mountaineers took a 4-2 lead on a kill from McCoy before a number of miscues tied the set at 7-7. Seton Hall took a 15-13 lead on a kill by Rubin before a pair of Anderson kills tied things once again at 17-17. Wells found the court to give WVU a 20-19 advantage, then teamed with Konstantinidou for the block to make it 22-20. A service error on the Pirates set up set point for the Mountaineers before McCoy and Attea teamed for the block to claim the set 25-22.
Both teams struggled in set two, each hitting .128. West Virginia got a pair of kills each from Sackett and Anderson, but trailed the Pirates 6-5. A five-point scoring run, capped with a block by Konstantinidou and McCoy, pushed the Mountaineers in front 16-11, but the Pirates countered with a scoring streak of their own to tie the set at 21-21. An ace from Attea was key, keeping the Mountaineers in front before Seton Hall came back to tie things up again 23-23 on a block. However, an error on the Pirates and a block from Wells and Konstantinidou gave West Virginia the 25-23 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After going up 4-0 on a kill from Anderson, the Mountaineers carried the momentum forward and took a 12-7 lead after Attea put down a pair and Anderson found the court once again. Back-to-back kills from Anderson, combined with an ace from Konstantinidou, pushed the WVU lead to 17-10. Sackett’s swing hit the floor to make it 19-13 before she teamed with Wells for a block as the Mountaineers went up 23-15. Wells and Anderson then slammed down the last two kills for WVU as the Mountaineers won the set 25-16 to take the match 3-0.
