MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University rowing coach Jimmy King announced today the addition of seven student-athletes as part of the 2014-15 incoming recruiting class.
“We strive to recruit individuals who are a great fit for our team based on both individual success as well as the program’s,” said King. “The freshmen seem to be adjusting fairly well at WVU, which is crucial for both their academic and athletic success.”
The class includes two recruits from New Jersey and one from Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia. The squad also includes two international recruits – one from New Zealand and Canada.
In previous years, King has expected the freshmen to rise to the occasion and become a significant competitor, and this year’s class is held to those same standards.
“There is a wide degree of experience among the freshmen, but any of them could rise to the challenge by the spring season,” said King. “The greatest factor will be the mindset that each of them takes on and develops as the year progresses.”
The rowing squad has been practicing on land for the last several weeks before experiencing the Monongahela River. While on land, the freshmen are getting acclimated to the workouts and are receiving day-to-day guidance from their new teammates.
WVU opens the fall season for the varsity squad at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh on Oct. 4, followed by the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia, on Nov. 1. WVU also will host a scrimmage on the Monongahela River for the novice squad on Nov. 7 against Duquesne.
