Countdown to Kickoff
September 11, 2014 02:12 PM | General
This will be the 51st overall meeting between these two border rivals with West Virginia holding a 26-22-2 advantage in this highly competitive series. Last year in Baltimore, Maryland snapped West Virginia’s seven-game winning streak in series play with a dominating 37-0 victory.
Saturday’s game will be televised in the Big Ten Network (Joe Beninati, Chuck Long, Scott McBrien and Frank Hanrahan) and will also be covered by the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG (Tony Caridi, Dwight Wallace and Jed Drenning) on affiliates throughout West Virginia and nationally through TuneIn and leanStream.
Here is the Countdown to Kickoff, presented by Friends of Coal:
10 – West Virginia has only lost TEN times since 2002 when the Mountaineers have won the turnover battle. WVU’s record during that span is 69-10 when producing more turnovers than its opponent.
9 – The West Virginia offense has had just NINE offensive plays covering a distance of 20 yards or longer. The longest play from scrimmage so far this year was a 32-yard Clint Trickett pass to Jordan Thompson against Alabama.
8 – The Mountaineer defense forced Towson to punt EIGHT times last Saturday. Towson was just 4 of 15 on its third down conversions for the night.
7 – Maryland snapped West Virginia’s SEVEN-game winning streak in series play with last year’s 37-0 victory in Baltimore.
6 – West Virginia’s defense forced Towson into SIX three-and-out possessions last weekend.
5 – There are currently FIVE players from the state of Maryland on West Virginia’s roster: Nana Twum Agyire (Chevy Chase), William Crest, Jr. (Baltimore), Marvin Gross (Baltimore), Jarrod Harper (Frostburg) and Jonathan Hayes (Annapolis)
4 – The Mountaineers hold a FOUR-game advantage over the Terps in all-time series play. West Virginia is 26-22-2 against Maryland, including a 12-11-1 record in games played in College Park.
3 – Dana Holgorsen’s offenses have produced 60 or more points THREE times during his West Virginia coaching tenure. The Mountaineers have scored 50 or more points seven times.
2 – Quarterback Clint Trickett’s TWO-game passing totals so far this season shows 64 completions in 85 attempts for 713 yards and three touchdowns. Trickett’s 713 yards passing are the seven-most nationally after two weeks of play.
1 – West Virginia’s 606-yard offensive outburst against Towson was the FIRST time the Mountaineers have produced more than 600 yards of offense since doing so against Georgia State last season.
Enjoy the game and be sure to stop back afterward for complete postgame coverage.
