MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team is set for a doubleheader weekend against Cornell on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m., and West Virginia State on March 9 at noon at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (2-7) come off a road loss at Penn State on March 2. West Virginia clinched the doubles point against the Nittany Lions, with the No. 9 ranked tandem in the Atlantic Region of freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole tallying its fifth win of the spring, downing Marie Bedard and Dasha Sapogova, 8-6. The sophomore duo of Irinka Toidze and Vivian Tsui defeated the Nittany Lions' (4-7) Taylor Shukow and Lisa Petruzillo, 8-6, for its second consecutive win.
Manole and Mrgole lead the Mountaineers with five wins in singles play to date. Manole’s four match win streak came to an end at Penn State, falling 6-2, 6-0, to Dasha Sapogova at the No. 2 singles position. Last week’s contest was the first time this season Manole competed at the No. 2 spot.
Tsui comes onto Saturday’s match claiming two of her previous three singles matches and doubles contests.
Cornell is 3-3, and is coming off a 5-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on March 2. The Big Red have dropped three of their last four outings. The duo of Lauren Frazier and Dena Tanenbaum are second on the team with a record of 3-0.
West Virginia State opens its spring season on Friday, March 8, at Marshall. The Yellow Jackets went 12-0 in the fall, including posting a perfect mark of 7-0 in conference play.
