Spurgeon Fifth at Air Gun Championships

Seven members of the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team competed at the USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championships, Dec. 5-7, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Junior Garrett Spurgeon placed fifth overall with a three-day total of 1868.7. He placed first in the men’s air rifle junior division and fourth in the open division on Friday with a 621.5 score and a 162.2 mark in the final, fourth in the junior division on Saturday with a 617.3 showing and 161.7 score in the final and second overall with a 617.9 score and 204.0 mark in the final on Sunday.
“I had a good weekend overall,” said Spurgeon. “Making the open final two out of three days was awesome for me, especially to come out second in the open final on day three. I’m really proud of the way I shot.”
Sophomore Jean-Pierre Lucas placed 11th overall with a 1858.3 total over three days. He placed fourth in the junior division on Friday with a 614.6 mark and 161.2 score in the final and second overall and third in juniors with a 620.6 relay score and 206.4 mark in the final on Saturday. On Sunday, he placed third in the junior division with a 616.1 relay score and 183.8 score in the final.
Junior Patrick Sunderman placed sixth in the junior division on Friday with a 617.8 score and 120.5 mark in the final relay, and shot 604.9 and 617.4 scores on Saturday and Sunday.
Classmate Michael Bamsey placed 12th overall with a three-day, 1856.0 total. He shot 619.6 on Friday and 618.2 on both Saturday and Sunday.
Senior Ziva Dvorsak placed seventh overall and earned the High Collegiate honor in the women’s 10m air rifle with a 1243.4 total (414.7, 413.4, 415.3).
Freshman Elizabeth Gratz finished sixth in the junior division. Gratz shot a 408.9 score on Friday, a 410.3 relay score and 161.2 mark for fourth in the junior final on Saturday and a 410.2 showing on Sunday.
Senior Thomas Kyanko placed 14th overall with a 1848.3 (615.3, 617.4, 615.6) three-day total.
