MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – AutoZone Liberty Bowl Executive Director Steve Ehrhart, today, extended an invitation for West Virginia (7-5) to face SEC opponent Texas A&M (7-5) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium (60,121) on Monday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m., ET.
“West Virginia certainly has a history with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl that dates back 50 years” WVU Director of Athletics Oliver Luck said. “We are excited for our football program to be back in a bowl game, and the city of Memphis will be a great place for our players, staff and fans. I know they will really enjoy the experience, and the Mountaineers look forward to an exciting visit to Memphis. The game against Texas A&M will provide the Liberty Bowl with a very entertaining matchup.”
This marks the 33rd bowl invitation for the Mountaineers and third in four years for Holgorsen. WVU has never faced Texas A&M before but holds a 24-23-2 all-time record against schools which hail from the Southeastern Conference.
“We faced a very challenging schedule this season with five Top 12 teams and playing a tough opponent like Texas A&M in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be yet another challenge this year,” WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen said. “We had a good season and getting to play in a bowl game is a great way to reward our players, especially our seniors. We will prepare hard for this bowl game and try to finish this season on a strong note.”
West Virginia only appearance in the Liberty Bowl occurred in 1964 against Utah in Atlantic City, N.J., at the Atlantic City Convention Hall, marking the first major bowl game played indoors.
