West Virginia (5-1) is coming off an 80-52 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. Junior Bria Holmes netted a game-high 25 points in the win. The Mountaineers shot a season-high 54.2 percent (32-of-59) from the field en route to their third win of the season.
“We’re just not playing consistent right now,” said coach Mike Carey. “In all three phases, we’re just not where we need to be. Our bench is not where it needs to be. We’re not playing as hard. The other night, I felt (Fairleigh Dickinson) played harder than us. That’s something I don’t like for us to do.”
Holmes’ 24.8 points per game is seventh nationally, while Lanay Montgomery’s 2.8 blocks per contest sits 21st. The Mountaineers are fifth nationally with 6.7 blocks per game and are in the top-35 in field goal percentage defense.
WVU has won 12 consecutive games inside the Coliseum. That streak is the fourth longest in program history and is the 10th longest active streak nationally.
Coppin State and the Mountaineers meet for the seventh time on Saturday. WVU has won the previous six meetings and won handily, 88-56, last season.
The Eagles are 1-5 this season with their lone win against Virginia Union (68-54). Coppin State is led by junior Janelle Lane with 12.2 points per game. She scored a career-high 20 in the win over Virginia Union.
Senior Bria Harris is averaging 10.2 points and pulling in a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game. The Eagles fell 49-29 at No. 19 Georgia on Tuesday evening.
