MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer defender Kadeisha Buchanan has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI First Team.
The sophomore, a member of the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-America First Team, earns her first career honor; she was named to the Best XI Freshman First Team in 2013. Buchanan, a Brampton, Ontario, native, has scored several postseason awards in the last month, including a spot on the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy semifinal list.
The two-time reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Buchanan is a two-time All-Big 12 honoree. A starter at center back for all 20 matches she was available for this season, she helped the No. 15-ranked Mountaineers post 12 shutouts, two short of the program single-season record. WVU did not allow a goal on the road in Big 12 play, marking the first time in the program’s 19-year history the team posted a shutout in each of its conference road matches.
The Mountaineer defense finished the year ranked No. 19 nationally in goals-against average (.651) and No. 20 in shutout percentage (.545).
Buchanan posted a career-high eight points (3 G, 2 A) in 2014; her goals and assist totals also were career highs.
In addition to Buchanan’s honor, freshman forward Michaela Abam was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Freshman First Team. A Houston native, Abam, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, played in all 22 matches this season and paced the Mountaineers in points (16), goals (8) and game-winning goals (4). Her totals ranked No. 6, No. 4 and No. 2, respectively, in the Big 12. An NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team honoree, she earned six starts and tallied two two-goal performances.
The Mountaineers finished the 2014 season on a program record 19-match unbeaten streak. WVU won its third straight Big 12 Conference regular-season title and successfully defended the Big 12 Soccer Championship title. The Mountaineers have won 13 conference titles since 2002.
WVU qualified for its 15th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and played Georgetown to a 0-0 draw in the first round. The Hoyas advanced on a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks.
