Panagiotakopoulos Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior libero/defensive specialist Anna Panagiotakopoulos of the West Virginia University volleyball team has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week as she surpassed the 1,000 dig mark in her career on Saturday, Nov. 29, at No. 19 Kansas State.
Panagiotakopoulos had 28 digs on the week. Despite an injury in the first set, Panagiotakopoulos recorded a season-high 19 in a 3-2 upset over the Wildcats.
Panagiotakopoulos and the Mountaineers completed their season. The Mountaineers (16-14, 6-10 Big 12) finished at least .500 or better for the fourth time in six years and the second straight season under coach Jill Kramer. They also set a Big 12 win record, while recording six conference wins in 2014. The six conference wins were the most for West Virginia since the 2009 season.
This Week in Volleyball: The volleyball season is now complete.
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers went 1-1 in their last week of action, falling at Kansas, 3-0, on Wednesday before rebounding with a thrilling 3-2 upset at Kanas State to close out the season on Saturday ... Jordan Anderson led the Big 12 in kills and points, recording 10 kills against the Jayhawks while Hannah Shreve led the blocking effort with six ... Anderson again paced the Mountaineers with 25 digs in their win over K-State, with Shreve adding six more blocks ... freshman setter Lamprini Konstantinidou tied her career high with 54 assists while junior libero Anna Panagiotakopoulos eclipsed 1,000 career digs with 19 in the match.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers open their 2014-15 indoor season with the annual Marty Pushkin Track Classic at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, at the WVU Shell Building.
Last Season in Track and Field: Cleary saw three of his student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships a year ago, including an eighth-place finish by Stormy Nesbit in the triple jump to earn First Team All-America distinctions.
Notes & Quotes: Coach Sean Cleary enters his eighth season as head coach of the Mountaineer track and field program … one of the Mountaineers key returners this season is senior Allison Lasnicki, who recorded the fastest time in school history in the 10,000 meters (33:46.22) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships a year ago.
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers are idle this week ... WVU begins its spring semester competition in Pittsburgh at the Pitt Hidden Duel from Jan. 16-18 at 9 a.m.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia travels to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex on Dec. 4-6.

Notes & Quotes: On each day of the Winter National Championships this weekend, the prelims will begin at 9 a.m., and the finals will begin at 5 p.m. … at the Mizzou Invite, the men recorded a third-place finish while the women placed sixth overall … some of the Mountaineer notable performances included Andrew Marsh taking home top honors in the 100-yard butterfly, becoming the first Mountaineer of the season to crack the 50-second mark in the 100 fly with a time of 47.49 … in the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle, Emma Skelley raced to second place in 16:36.21.

This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers head to Las Vegas, Nevada, on Friday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 6, for the 33rd Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia went 0-3 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals on Saturday, dropping a close match to Northern Illinois, 18-17, and falling to Rutgers, 19-16, and No. 3 Cornell, 26-9 ... Mike Morales and Jake A. Smith highlighted the action, as Morales defeated No. 9 Mark Grey of Cornell in an 11-7 decision while Smith topped No. 17 Jace Bennett of the Big Red in a 6-1 decision ... both went 2-1 on the day, as did Bubba Scheffel who came away with a pin of Rutgers’ Anthony Pafumi in 6:06 and won a major decision over NIU’s Quinton Rosser, 12-4 ... no. 19 Zeke Moisey also complied a 2-1 mark at the event.
Coach Sammie Henson: “It was a hard day at the office,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “We felt we could have gotten a couple of team wins but it didn’t fall our way. Our guys performed tough through the last two duals and we pulled off some big upsets against ranked guys from Cornell, which should improve some of our individual rankings. I was very impressed with Mike, Jake and Cory Stainbrook in those upsets. We have a short week before we head to Las Vegas on Wednesday.”
This Week in Women’s Basketball: WVU visits Fairleigh Dickinson for a 7 p.m. showdown in Hackensack, New Jersey ... the Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest versus Coppin State ... coach Mike Carey has teamed up with the Salvation Army’s ‘Forgotten Angels’ this year ... as part of the campaign, a toy drive will be conducted at this Saturday’s game versus the Eagles ... fans who bring a new unwrapped toy to the game will receive a ticket to future regular season game.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: No. 22/21-ranked West Virginia picked up a pair of wins over Evansville (83-39) and Fairfield (67-53) last week to improve to 4-1 on the season ... junior Bria Holmes reached the 30-point plateau for the third time in her career with 32 points against the Purple Aces ... senior Averee Fields scored a team-high 18 points in WVU’s victory over Fairfield on Saturday.
Notes and Quotes: Bria Holmes has reached double-figures in nine straight games dating back to last season … Holmes’ 24.8 points per game leads the Big 12 and was fifth nationally as of last Friday … Averee Fields has scored double-figures in all five games, she is second on the team with 17.2 ppg … West Virginia has won 12-consecutive home games since last season – that streak is the fourth longest in program history.
