MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Unable to overcome 22 attacking errors, the West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 tilt to Iowa State in Big 12 action at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday. The Mountaineers (13-12, 3-8) fell to the Cyclones (13-9, 5-6) in set scores of 24-26, 20-25 and 20-25.
It marks the fourth consecutive loss for West Virginia – its longest losing streak of the season. Iowa State entered the tilt having upset No. 22 Kanas State in straight sets on Wednesday.
“We were working on a 6-2 today, trying to take the strengths of all of our players and make some things happen offensively. I think that there were times when we were very, very good at that,” said Mountaineer coach Jill Kramer. “It just wasn’t consistent enough yet. With time, it will get a lot better. We had some great performances out of some people – it didn’t matter where we’ve put Nikki (Attea), she’s done a great job for us. We’ve just got to get everybody else in that same place.
Jordan Anderson and Nikki Attea each registered nine kills for the Mountaineers, with Attea hitting for a .333 clip. Hannah Sackett added eight kills while Caleah Wells found the court four times in the loss. Evyn McCoy also hit .333 with three kills as WVU hit for a .130 clip with 35 team kills.
Hannah Shreve led the blocking effort with seven block assists, while Sackett contributed four of WVU’s 9.0 team blocks. Attea added a trio, and McCoy put up a pair as well. Wells and Anderson each finished the day with one block, with wells putting in six digs.
West Virginia continued to a 6-2 system, as Lamprini Konstantinidou dished out 15 assists and a pair of aces to go with a team-best six digs. Brittany Sample had 16 assists and a pair of digs, while Gianna Gotterba and Anderson each dug four balls.
Iowa State hit .255 as a team with 44 kills and 5.0 team blocks. The Cyclones totaled 41 assists and three service aces on the day while also recording nine service errors and 18 attacking errors.
The Mountaineers overcame a slow start in set one to comeback and take a late lead. The Cyclones used a 3-0 run to take a 14-8 advantage, but the Mountaineers countered with a 4-0 run of their own to trail by one, down 15-14. A kill by Shreve and an attack into the net by the Cyclones tied the score at 16-16, and the two battled it out until back-to-back kills by Anderson and Shreve put the Mountaineers in front 22-20. The Cyclones tied it up at 23-23, before an attack in to the net put the Mountaineers at set point with a 24-23 lead. However, Iowa State would rattle off three in a row to take the set, 26-24, on a service ace.
The Cyclones took an 8-1 lead to start set two, and kept the advantage throughout the set. WVU used a kill by wells and a block from Wells and Shreve to cut the deficit to five before a 3-0 run brought the Mountaineers within two, down 17-15. Iowa State responded with a 3-0 run to take a 20-15 lead before West Virginia got kills from Attea and Sackett along with a block to cut the deficit to two, down 20-18. Sackett and Attea each added another kill to keep the set alive, but the Cyclones would find the court once more for the win, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
West Virginia came out strong to start the final stanza, taking a 3-1 lead on an Anderson kill and a block from McCoy and Attea. A Cyclone service error, followed by kills from Anderson, Attea and Sackett pushed the Mountaineers in front 13-7. However, Iowa State used a 7-1 run to tie the set 14-14 on a kill. They rattled off four more in a row to make it an 18-15 advantage before Wells found the court and Shreve and Anderson posted a block. An ace by Konstantinidou cut the deficit to just one point with the Mountaineers down 20-19, but ISU capitalized on a pair of WVU errors and added a pair of kills to set up set-point with a 24-19. The Cyclones served into the net to extend the match, but rebounded with a kill to take the final set, 25-20, and win the match 3-0.
