MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore defender Carly Black of the No. 7-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Today’s honor is the first career award for the Horsham, Pennsylvania, native. An exercise physiology major, she shows a 3.94 grade point average (GPA).
“Carly’s achievement epitomizes the effort our staff wants to see from each of our student-athletes – success on the field and in the classroom,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I’m happy and proud that Carly’s efforts have been recognized.”
Black is the fifth Mountaineer to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and the second in as many years. The women’s soccer program has received six honors since 2001.
A two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 Soccer First Team, Black also has landed on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, she is a member of the President’s and Dean’s List and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
A two-year starter at center back for the 2014 Big 12 Conference regular-season and tournament champions, Black helped the Mountaineers record 12 shutouts this season, two short of the program single-season record. The WVU defense did not allow a goal in four conference road matches, marking the first time in program history the squad posted a shutout in every road conference contest.
Black dished out two assists this season and shows six points (1 G, 4 A) for her career.
Black and the rest of the 2014 Mountaineers earned their 13th straight NSCAA Team Academic Award this week. WVU (16-2-4, 7-0-1) finished the year with a 0-0 draw against Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 15. GU advanced to the second round on a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks. The draw pushed the team’s unbeaten streak to a program-record 19 matches.
