MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will cap its home slate this Saturday when the Mountaineers (14-13, 4-9) host Baylor (14-15, 4-10) in a Big 12 match at 6:30 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
The squad will celebrate Senior Day, honoring middle blocker Evyn McCoy following the contest. The last active Mountaineer to have competed in the Big East conference, McCoy helped the West Virginia volleyball team make the transition to the Big 12. For her efforts she departs as one of West Virginia’s all-time blocking leaders with her 372 career total blocks rank eighth in program history, and her 337 block assists put her fourth all-time. McCoy is also slated to finish amongst the top ten in blocks per set with a 0.99 average. In 2013, McCoy had seven blocks and seven kills to help the Mountaineers down Kansas State, 3-1, for the program’s first-ever Big 12 win. Her team-best 1.16 blocks per set helped West Virginia to its first 20-win season since 1991 and ranks fourth all-time amongst juniors on the single-season blocks lists.
In addition, fans who follow the Mountaineers on Twitter and Facebook can download a special graphic for $1 admission.
“Saturday will be another great opportunity for us to test ourselves against a solid Big 12 team,” said WVU coach Jill Kramer. “Our team did a great job fighting in clutch-time situations last weekend and we are looking forward to competing again this weekend. We will also be celebrating Evyn's career at WVU on Saturday evening following the match and the impact she has made on our volleyball program. She's put in a lot of work the past 4 years - I'm a true believer that what you put into something is what you get out of it.”
West Virginia and Baylor meet for the ninth time in series history on Saturday and for the sixth time as league foes. The Mountaineers and the Bears first met in 1986, with Baylor claiming the win. The two met twice more in nonconference action before West Virginia joined the Big 12 in 2012. Baylor leads the all-time series 6-2, though WVU has taken the previous two meetings. The Mountaineers are 2-3 against Baylor in league action, but are 0-2 against the Bears at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers traveled to Waco, Texas, on October 22 and came away with a 3-1 victory. West Virginia hit .263 as a team with 11 blocks in the victory. Jordan Anderson paved the way with 19 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Nikki Attea was good for 15 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Lamprini Konstantinidou dished out 45 assists in the win, while Gianna Gotterba also had a stellar night with 18 digs.
Last Saturday, WVU stopped a five-match skid last in earning a 3-0 win over Texas Tech at the WVU Coliseum. The sweep marked their first Big 12 sweep of the season. It was also the first time they’ve swept a league foe since November 16, 2013 when they earned a 3-0 win over TCU.
Next up is a week-long trek to Kansas for the Mountaineers. The squad will take on Kansas in Lawrence on Wednesday evening in a 6:30 p.m. contest before heading to Manhattan to face Kansas State on Saturday.
