Tennis Completes Fall Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team completes its fall season at Ridgeview Racquet Club in the Martha Thorn Invitational with one doubles win and six singles victories.
In doubles action, Hailey Barrett and Lyn Yuen Choo defeated JMU’s Sarah Khan and Cara Wirth in a tie break with a score of 8-7 (1).
In singles action, the Mountaineers captured three victories in the morning session against James Madison.
Sophomore Kaja Mrgole defeated JMU’s Rachel Nelson with a score of 4-6, 6-4 10-8. Freshman Habiba Shaker bested JMU’s Kimmy Herrock in two straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Freshman Yvon Martinez defeated JMU’s Emily Bradshaw with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
The Mountaineers went 3-1 in the afternoon singles session against Duquesne. Freshman Carolina Lewis bested Duquesne’s Alexa Miller with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-4. Freshman Shaker went two-for-two on the day, and defeated Duquesne’s Spencer Caravaggio (7-5, 3-6, 10-5). Martinez defeated Duquesne’s Chandler Consonery in two straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
“I thought it was a good weekend of competition, and the tournament went very well. In our case, we did not start off well, but we progressed throughout the weekend,” said coach Miha Lisac. “We are definitely looking to carry this positivity and momentum into the spring season.”
The Mountaineers conclude its fall season, and will resume in January for the start of the spring season.
