MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will officially open their 2014-15 seasons at the annual West Virginia State Games in Huntington, West Virginia, on Oct. 10-11.
The action will get underway on Friday at 4 p.m., and will conclude Saturday evening.
“This event is to celebrate and bring publicity to all the collegiate programs in the state that offer swimming and diving,” said coach Vic Riggs. “We've been fortunate to have strong teams each year to win the event. West Virginia has many great swimming and diving programs, and it is fun to get to see all of the state compete together and hopefully gain some exposure for all the programs. Marshall will be a good challenge for our women this year, as both teams are stronger than last year.”
This is the fourth straight season the Mountaineers will compete in the event, with the WVU men’s and women’s teams sweeping the meet each of the past three seasons.
Last weekend, West Virginia held its annual Gold-Blue Meet at the WVU natatorium. The meet was highlighted by a new pool record set by senior Tim Squires in the 100 free (44.92).
“Each meet is a learning curve, and this meet will set the starting point,” Riggs said. “We've just entered our third week of heavy training and the team is starting to feel the effects of that. We will use this meet to adjust our training based off how they compete this weekend.”
