MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On the heels of her two-goal performance in Big 12 Conference champion West Virginia University women’s soccer’s 3-1 win against Oklahoma Sunday, redshirt-freshman forward Amandine Pierre-Louis has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
The honor is the first career award for the Montreal, Quebec, native. She is the fifth different Mountaineer to score a Big 12 honor in the last three weeks. In total, seven student-athletes from the No. 8-ranked WVU squad have earned one award this season, the most individual honors of any team this season.
“This award means a lot to me because it’s been a hard season for me,” said Pierre-Louis. “At the same time, it’s always been about getting the job done, and I knew we could win that game Sunday.”
Pierre-Louis’ two-goal performance against the Sooners was the first of her career and tripled her season goal output. Both second-half goals were unassisted, including the game-winner in the 75th minute. She now shows eight points (3 G, 2 A) on the season.
Earlier this season, freshman forward Michaela Abam was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 23.
Junior forward Kailey Utley also earned a weekly honor today, as the St. Louis, Missouri, native was named the College Sports Madness Big 12 Player of the Week. Utley scored three goals in the Mountaineers’ two wins over the weekend, including both scores in WVU’s 2-1, double-overtime win against Oklahoma State on Oct. 24. Utley paces the team with 15 points (5 G, 5 A).
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire College Rankings were released today, and the Mountaineers (13-2-2, 6-0-1) sit at No. 10 for the second straight week.
Two additional Big 12 teams are ranked, with Kansas (15-3) checking in at No. 14 and Texas Tech following at No. 18.
The top five remain unchanged, as defending NCAA champion UCLA (15-0-2) continues to hold the top spot. Florida State (15-1-1) and Virginia (16-1) follow at No. 2 and No. 3, while Stanford (14-1-2) ranks No. 4 and North Carolina (11-2-2) is No. 5.
Additionally, the Mountaineers are up two spots to No. 12 in the Soccer America Top 25, their best position of the year.
The three-time reigning Big 12 regular-season champion Mountaineers conclude their regular-season against Baylor on Friday, Oct. 31, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. It’s “Senior Night,” and forward Kate Schwindel, defender Jess Crowder, midfielder Ali Connelly and goalkeeper Katie Osterman will be honored before first kick. Additionally, Mountaineer Alumni will be recognized at halftime. Fans will be admitted for free, courtesy of United Bank. Youth fans are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and attend Trunk or Treat in the Coliseum band parking lot starting at 5:30 p.m.
