MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out the final day of the Big Easy Tennis Classic with freshman Carolina Lewis taking home the singles Flight 3 title earlier today in New Orleans.
In the semifinals, Lewis defeated Louisiana University at Monore’s Jana Duhanova in two straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-2. In the championship, Lewis bested University of New Orleans’s Hafsa Laraibi in another two straight set match (6-3, 6-2) to win the singles Flight 3 bracket. Lewis went 4-0 on the weekend in singles action.
In the singles Flight 1 bracket, freshman Lyn Yuen Choo made a run all the way to the finals. On the way, Choo defeated Troy University’s Sanae Ohta with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-5, but fell in the finals to South Eastern University’s Renee Villarreal (2-6, 6-4, 10-4).
In doubles action, freshman Habiba Shaker and junior Hailey Barrett earned two victories on the day. Shaker and Barrett bested ULM’s Amy Olivier and Jana Duhanova with a score of 8-5, followed by a victory in the semifinals against SLU’s Lucia Bustamante and Dany Raygadas (8-5). However, Shaker and Barrett could not get past Yasmine Rashad and Laraibi in the final round to claim the doubles bracket title.
“Hailey and Habiba had a good round of matches today, advancing to the finals in the doubles tournament. In singles, Lyn Yuen and Carolina had a solid weekend of play as well,” said coach Miha Lisac. “Overall, I saw good effort from everyone, and we are continuing to take strides in the right direction. We still have one more tournament left of fall play, and we will continue to get better.”
WVU returns to action this weekend as the Mountaineers host the Martha Thorn Invite in honor of former coach Martha Thorn, from Oct. 31 – Nov. 2.
