Tennis Finishes Day One in New Orleans

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened competition at the Big Easy Tennis Classic in New Orleans earlier today with six doubles wins and five singles match wins.
In doubles action, freshman Habiba Shaker and junior Hailey Barrett advanced to the quarterfinals defeating Southeastern Louisiana University’s Margaux Kaltenbacher and Madina Vorotnikova with a score of 8-1 in the first round, and bested University of New Orleans’s Marta Sans and Soledad Caldern (8-1) in the second.
Senior Ikttesh Chahal and freshman Carolina Lewis bested Rebekah Adewumi and Akshatha Ananth of Jackson State University with a score of 8-3, and defeated University Louisiana Lafayette’s Alex Way and Abby Johnson (8-7 (4)) in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals.
In flight one singles action, freshman Lyn Yuen Choo advanced to the semifinals. With a bye in round one, Choo defeated UNO’s Soledad Calderon with a score of 7-6, 0-6, 10-5 in the second round to advance. Today, Choo captured her eighth win of the season and advanced her singles record to 8-1 this fall.
In flight two singles action, Shaker defeated ULL’s Alex Way with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 in the first round, but fell in the second round to UNO’s Anna Segarra (6-7, 6-4, 10-5).
In flight three singles action, Lewis advanced with a bye in round one. She then bested SLU’s Lucia Bustamanate in round two in two straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1. In round three, Lewis defeated Troy University’s Julia Albuquerque in two straight sets (6-0, 6-2) to move on to tomorrow’s semifinals.
“We were very inconsistent in our play today. Since we have another day of matches tomorrow, we will look to get more consistent in our level of play,” said coach Miha Lisac.
The Big Easy Tennis Classic resumes tomorrow with matches starting at 8 a.m.
