MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Two of the most explosive offenses in college football will hook up Saturday afternoon at Milan Puskar Stadium when West Virginia plays host to fourth-ranked Baylor.
Two years ago, these two teams produced a combined 133 points in West Virginia’s first-ever Big 12 game and more fireworks are likely on Saturday.
The Bears are one of five undefeated teams left with a shot of reaching this year’s college football playoff and there to watch them at the stadium will be WVU Director of Athletics Oliver Luck, a member of this year’s playoff selection committee.
Last year, Baylor defeated West Virginia 73-42 by putting up a school-record 872 yards of offense and last weekend the Bears scored 24 straight points to defeat TCU, 61-58, in Waco.
Today’s game will kickoff at noon and will be televised nationally on FOX Sports 1.
Here is today’s Countdown to Kickoff, presented by the Friends of Coal:
10 – The Mountaineers now have 16 players on their two-deep roster with at least TEN career starts to their credit. The team leader in career starts is senior offensive guard Quinton Spain with 32 career starts.
9 – Quarterback Clint Trickett is seeking his NINTH career 300-yard passing performance on Saturday. His career-high 511 yards passing at Maryland earlier this year were the second most in school history.
8 – The Mountaineer offense has scored touchdowns EIGHT times so far this year on first down – the most frequent of the four downs.
7 –Clint Trickett has passed for more than 300 yards in a school record SEVEN straight games following last Saturday’s 301-yard performance against Texas Tech.
6 – West Virginia ranks 28th in the country in scoring offense, but just SIXTH in the Big 12 Conference this week with an average of 36.7 points per game.
5 – West Virginia has produced a school record FIVE straight games with 500 yards or more of total offense during last weekend’s win at Texas Tech.
4 – West Virginia ranks FOURTH among all FBS schools with an average of 88.2 plays per game against FBS teams.
3 – Linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski had the THIRD double-digit performance in tackles this season during last weekend’s win at Texas Tech.
2 – West Virginia had TWO 100-yard rushers in last week’s win at Texas Tech: Wendell Smallwood (123) and Rushel Shell (110). It was the first time since 2008 that has happened.
1 – Wide receiver Kevin White ranks FIRST in the country in receiving yards with an average of 148.0 yards per game.
