Baseball Set to Renew Pitt Rivalry

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will travel to Pitt on Tuesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. non-conference game at Charles L. Cost Field.
The Mountaineers go into the game with a 6-9 overall record, most recently going 1-3 last weekend in the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. WVU defeated Bowling Green in the opening game before falling to Central Michigan, Maine and Iowa.
Sophomore center fielder Bobby Boyd leads WVU at the plate, batting .426 with 10 runs, three doubles, five RBIs and nine stolen bases. Junior left fielder Jacob Rice is hitting .403, adding five doubles, nine RBIs and four stolen bases, while designated hitter Matt Frazer is the team leader in RBIs with 11.
As a team, WVU is batting .301 with 30 extra-base hits and 61 runs driven in. The pitching staff has a 3.93 ERA in 135 innings with 75 strikeouts.
Junior left-hander Zach Bargeron will get his second start of the season on Tuesday. Last week against Eastern Kentucky, Bargeron earned a no-decision in 4.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Pitt enters the game with a 9-4 record and a four-game win streak after sweeping Manhattan and Youngstown State in last weekend’s Panther Classic.
Pitt is led at the plate by sophomore first baseman Eric Hess, who is hitting .457 on the year with five doubles, one homer, eight RBIs and six stolen bases. Junior right fielder Casey Roche leads the team with five home runs, while Elvin Soto has a team-leading 18 RBIs.
The Panthers are hitting .318 as a team with 22 doubles, nine triples, 13 home runs and 91 RBIs. The pitching staff holds a 4.12 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 113.2 innings.
Sophomore right-hander Luke Curtis will get his first start of the season for Pitt. Curtis has pitching 2.2 innings of relief in two games, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
This will be the 185th meeting between the two schools with the Mountaineers holding a 99-85 advantage.
