Tennis Finishes Play in Texas

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed play at the Longhorn Invitational on Sunday afternoon, with three players seeing action.
“We have to learn what it really means to compete,” said coach Tina Samara. “Meaning, we have to run down every ball, fight for every point, and compete in every match. This tournament allowed us to see the level of competition we will see during the spring.”
Seniors Emily Mathis and Audrey Wooland, along with freshman Hailey Barrett, all saw action in a voluntary singles bracket.
Mathis defeated Rice’s Daniela Trigo, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 for her second singles win and third overall win of the weekend.
“Emily fought her butt off all weekend,” Samara said. “She needs to continue to stick with the gameplan and execute it consistently in order to keep winning.”
Wooland was able to get her first singles win of the weekend, as she was able to knock off Rice’s Liat Zimmerman, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0.
"Audrey's win came against an opponent that was very successful last season," Samara said. "As a team, Rice finished the year ranked No. 30, so overall it was a very good win for Audrey as she continues to build towards the spring season."
Barrett, who scored two singles win on Saturday afternoon, was defeated by Whitney Wofford, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0.

The Mountaineers will return to competition on Oct. 5-7, as they will travel to Wake Forest, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational.
