MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team returns to action this weekend with a pair of spring events, beginning with its annual 4-versus-4 fundraiser on Saturday, March 10. Then on Sunday, March 11, the Mountaineers travel to Maryland to take on the Terps in a 90-minute spring contest.
"We are very excited about Saturday’s 4v4 tournament,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Our goal has always been to raise $10,000 or more. This is a huge event. We feel that everybody has somebody very close to them that is affected by breast cancer. We just want to get that awareness out and have people come out and contribute.”
The small-sided tournament raises funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center at WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Teams will compete in the “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” all-day event at the Caperton Indoor Facility, beginning at 8 a.m. The tournament is open to boys and girls in grades three through eight, with an open division for college-age and older groups.
“Being a female sport, it's something you have to be aware of, and it's a great cause to find a cure,” adds Izzo-Brown. “Our ladies enjoy interacting with the community, while helping raise money and awareness. We’ll be wearing our pink jerseys as we do our part to help kick breast cancer."
The WVU women’s soccer team has raised more than $72,000 over the past eight years to help fight breast cancer.
The Mountaineers resume spring competition by taking to the road for a 2 p.m. match at Maryland on March 11.
“Sunday will be a challenge, just because we are down so many bodies right now,” says Izzo-Brown. “But we will go out and compete and try to get better against a very good NCAA team like Maryland. That is what the spring season is all about.”
