MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Bob Huggins remarks on being selected a 10th seed in this year's NCAA tournament and facing seventh-seeded Gonzaga on Thursday in Pittsburgh:
On playing in PittsburghWhat makes you think I am happy about it? You are not going to get the ticket requests that I am going to get.
On what he knows about GonzagaI don’t know very much. I have seen some of their highlights. Sometimes I will cut the tape off, and they will be on late at night. I know Mark Few pretty well. We played them a couple times when I was in Cincinnati. I will know more about them in a while.
On if he spoke to Coach FewI talked to Frank (Martin) a little while ago. It is amazing how those guys know everything that is going to happen. I haven’t talked to him, but I will.
On benefits of playing in PittsburghWe need all the help we can get, so I hope it helps. Hopefully they (the fans) are on the phone now trying to get tickets because we are only going to get our allotment. Hopefully they find ways to get there, because I know they did when we played in Washington D.C.
On what they have done since returning from New York CityWe had practice a couple of days and tried to clean some things up. We shot the ball.
On potential of playing Ohio State in PittsburghWe played Missouri when we were a No. 2 in 2010. They were a pretty good team. The advantage of being a one or two seed is having an easier first game. Even if you are a No. 1 seed, you are going to get someone that is pretty good.
On his feelings prior to the announcement of bracketsI don’t know anything more than anyone else, but when all those guys have you as a No. 10 seed, you are probably a No. 10. We were pretty much a consensus No. 10. No one really talked about us being on the bubble. They always had us as a lock. Whenever we got the South Florida win, I thought we were in the tournament. When you look at our numbers, they weren’t even close to the bubble teams. More than half of our schedule was top 100 teams. We did what they asked us to do. The crazy thing is if you start thinking about what would have happened had we won some of those games.
On if seeding mattersIt does matter. The biggest thing that it does for you is that you can sneak in some second game stuff if you are pretty confident about winning the first game.
On preparing for an unfamiliar teamThere are only so many things that you can do. Basketball comes down to a couple things. You can’t really get more than three guys involved in a play. You have to figure out a way to get the other two guys out of the way. It’s all about numbers and trying to get the number in your favor. There are only so many ways to do that. I have had to tell Deniz a number of times that if the big guy goes out on the wing, they are going to back screen you. Anytime there is a cross screen, there is a down screen. It is all the same stuff, but it is matter of how you get into it.
On possible changes heading into the tournamentWe can’t change much. I have tried to outsmart them, but our opponent was more prepared for it than we were.
