Men’s Soccer Set for Crucial Match

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will travel to No. 2 Akron for a crucial Mid-American Conference match on Saturday, Oct. 20, at First Energy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
West Virginia (8-3-2, 3-0-1 MAC) sits in second place, two points behind conference leader Akron (10-1-2, 4-0-0 MAC).
“If there’s any team capable of scoring goals, it’s probably ours,” coach Marlon LeBlanc says. “We’re going to have to pick and choose moments when we can go out and press them, and be as aggressive as we typically are.”
The Mountaineers were in action last Sunday in a 3-1 win over MAC opponent Hartwick at home. Senior Uwem Etuk paced the Mountaineers with the game-winning goal and an assist in the victory.
Senior Eric Schoenle continues to lead West Virginia with five goals (10 points), while Etuk is second on the team with nine points (2 goals, 5 assists). Thirteen different Mountaineers have recorded a goal this season, while 15 have recorded at least one point.
Senior goalkeeper Pat Eavenson will start in net, coming into the match with a 0.91 goals-against average and 3.5 shutouts in 11 starts.
The Zips come into the match unbeaten in their last 42 conference matches, the second-longest run in NCAA history. Akron is currently riding an eight game unbeaten streak that includes eight consecutive shutouts.
The Zips have out-scored their opponents 30-13 this season, while also out-shooting opponents, 233-111.
Offensively, Akron is led by Scott Caldwell (7 goals, 5 assists), Reinaldo Brenes (7 goals, 2 assists) and Eric Stevenson (5 goals, 4 assists).
David Meves has started all 13 games in goal and has a 0.37 goals-against average. Meves has made 37 saves with only five goals against and 10 shutouts.
Caleb Porter is in his seventh and final season at the helm of Akron and has a record 114-18-16. Prior to the start of the season Porter announced that he would be leaving the Zips at the end of the season to become the head coach of the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer.
Akron holds an 8-2-1 advantage all-time over West Virginia, including a 3-2 win in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2010. The Zips went on to win the national championship that season.
