MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – After a weekend that saw it split its first two Eastern Wrestling League contests, the West Virginia University wrestling team has six wrestlers ranked in multiple polls.
Redshirt senior Matt Ryan (184) leads the way for the Mountaineers, as he holds the team’s highest individual ranking, while junior Shane Young (125), redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi (133) sophomore Michael Morales, redshirt junior Lance Bryson (174) and redshirt senior Brandon Williamson (HWT) are also ranked.
Ryan is ranked No. 17 by InterMat, No. 18 by Wrestling Insider Magazine, and No. 20 by both Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling Report. The Eighty-Four, Pa., native is 11-3 this season.
Young, who is 16-4 this season, is ranked No. 25 by Wrestling Report.
Pennesi, who collected two wins this past weekend to add to his team-leading total of 21, comes in at No. 26 in the Wrestling Report poll.
A native of Brick, N.J., Morales, ranks No. 32 in Wrestling Report and is 3-1 this season.
Bryson, who has compiled an 18-9 record this season, is ranked No. 22 by Wrestling Report and No. 20 by AWN.
Williamson, who scored the match’s clinching win on Sunday over No. 26 Quint McCorkle of Clarion, rose to No. 23 in the Wrestling Report poll and entered the AWN poll at No. 18. Williamson is 17-6 overall this season and has six wins over ranked opponents.
The Mountaineers will return to the mat on Friday, when they host EWL foe Lock Haven at 7:30 p.m. at the Coliseum.
