SAN MARCOS, Texas – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell in its second straight road game of the year to Texas State 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 19-25) at the Strahan Coliseum.
In their very first meeting, the Bobcat (4-3) offense recorded 50 kills for a .387 hitting percentage against the Mountaineers (2-5).
Texas State started with a dominating lead in set one before a WVU timeout and a kill by freshman outside hitter Halle Kearney pulled the Mountaineers back into the set. However, the team could not find any offensive rhythm, and the Bobcats posted four team blocks to win the set 25-16.
The Mountaineers came out in the second set fighting and quickly took advantage of the Bobcats' slow start by taking a 9-4 lead. Texas State forged a comeback as the teams started trading points until 15-15 when five straight kills from Amber Calhoun put the Bobcats up 24-20. WVU held off set point with a kill by Kearney, but Texas State responded with a kill from Ashlee Hilbun to end the set.
With the momentum on their side, the Bobcats started set three with a 7-4 lead before WVU stormed back to take a 12-11 lead with a kill from senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky. The Mountaineers could not hold on to the lead as Texas State went on a 13-6 run and ended the set on Calhoun’s 15th kill of the match.
Freshman Evyn McCoy led the Mountaineers with eight kills, a .429 hitting percentage and two blocks. The team was led defensively by senior libero Serinna Russo and senior outside hitter Kylie Armbruster, as each recorded 10 digs.
The team will travel to Waco tomorrow to take on the Baylor Bears, at 7 p.m., in its final match road trip.
