MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s tennis team completed its first day of play at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C.
The competition was the team's first since its trip to the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 16-18.
"We competed better than our last tournament. However, today, no one got beat - we beat ourselves," said coach Tina Samara. "We have to get better at closing out games and matches."
Four Mountaineers competed in a total of eight matches during the course of the day, including sophomore Mary Chupa.
Chupa scored a victory in Flight D Singles play against Elise Held of Davidson, 6-2, 6-2.
Fellow sophomore Melis Tanik fell to Karolina Chernaya of Campbell, 6-3, 6-3 in Flight A Singles action.
Tanik and Chupa later combined to play in the Flight A doubles draw against UNC-Wilmington’s Olga Blank and Kelly Cameron, but was defeated by the tandem 8-5.
In their second doubles match, Tanik and Chupa defeated a team from Radford, 8-2.
Freshman Ikttesh Chahal and senior Catie Wickline were the other doubles pairing for WVU, as they competed in the Flight B draw.
The duo lost in a hard fought matchup against Brites Moniz-Soares and Elise Held of Davidson, 9-8.
Chalal and Wickline's second doubles contest ended in an 8-5 loss, as they failed to convert on chances after being up 5-4.
Play in the Wake Forest Invitational will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
