MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team lost a tough match to No. 21 Ohio State 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 20-25) in front of a crowd of 529 at the WVU Coliseum in the last match of the day at the WVU Volleyball Mountaineer Invitational.
The Mountaineers (1-2) had trouble putting together a fluid offense as the Buckeyes’ (4-0) defense recorded 11 blocks in the match.
“For us to get where we want this season, I think this was a good test for us,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We have to be better than we were tonight against every team but especially teams of this caliber. We really let the match get away from us and it should have been much tighter then it was if we would have taken care of our side of the net better. We need to learn from it and move on because we have two tough opponents tomorrow.”
Hitting errors plagued the Mountaineers in the first set as they watched the Buckeyes jump to a 21-14 advantage. With no room for error, the team pushed the Buckeyes and held off set point three times before Emily Dank connected with Amanda Peterson for her third kill of the set.
Down a set, the Mountaineers fought to take the lead in set two with freshman outside hitter Halle Kearney recording four kills to give West Virginia the lead at 11-10. The Buckeyes had an answer to Kearney and proceeded to go on a 15-5 run and gain full control with Mari Hole’s seven kills and no errors.
The Buckeye’s used their momentum from the first two sets to finish off the match in three.
Kearney and senior outside hitter Kylie Armbruster led the way for the Mountaineers with seven kills apiece while senior libero Serinna Russo led the team with 12 digs and one service ace.
The team returns to action tomorrow afternoon with their last two matches in the invitational. West Virginia will face Towson and Robert Morris at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, at the WVU Coliseum.
