UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Three Penn State goals in the first eight minutes set the tone in a 5-0 shutout over visiting No. 17 West Virginia in game one of the Penn State Invitational Friday evening at Jeffrey Field.
The Nittany Lions took a 1-0 lead just 62 seconds into the contest off the foot of midfielder Maddy Evans. Evans, who pushed forward to the back side of the play, received a pass from the left flank and slotted a ball on the ground for the second fastest goal in Penn State history.
Penn State doubled its lead in the fifth minute on a goal from midfielder Jess Rosenbluth. Taylor Schram chased down a ball driven to the right corner as PSU reversed fields. Schram sent a pass into the middle for an easy finish and 2-0 lead.
Forward Maya Hayes made it 3-0 on a goal at the 7:51 mark with assists from Taylor Schram and Erin McNulty. McNulty sent a long ball up the middle that was flicked on by Schram to a sprinting Hayes down the middle of the field.
The loss snapped West Virginia three-match win streak at Jeffrey Field as WVU moves to 1-2-0 on the season, while Penn State improves to 2-1-0.
The last time West Virginia allowed three first-half goals was against Wake Forest in a 2009 NCAA second round match.
Forward Blake Miller had West Virginia’s best scoring chance of the first half with a shot inside the right side of the box in the 11th minute. Miller sent a high floater towards the far post with PSU goalkeeper McNulty coming up with punch save over the crossbar.
Mountaineer forward Katie Lenz played well off the bench, logging a career high 48 minutes. The sophomore created a scoring chance late in the first half with a bending shot from the top of the box that forced McNulty to her left for the save.
The second half began with each team trading possessions. In the 52nd minute, WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane made a brilliant save with a diving stop to her right on a Schram header from 12 yards out.
The Nittany Lions completed their scoring with a pair of goals in the second half on through balls up the middle. Schram added a goal in the 65th minute and Hayes netted her second of the match in the 67th minute.
Penn State outshot West Virginia 16-14 and WVU held a 6-3 corner kick edge. Miller led WVU with five shots.
